I'm curious what other people do to tune their power delivery. I haven't gone too deep into ESC tuning but have made a few cars better to drive with some changes here and there. But with ESCs and radios having so many options these days where is the best place to start in your opinion?

Well, depends on what you're trying to do. With me I rarely adjust any esc or radio settings. Me with ESCs, sometimes I might change the punch if its too much for me, or turn down the LVC if I have poor quality batteries. With me running mostly all HW esc's in my cars the factory loaded settings on their ESCs are pretty good for most drivers. It's more like fine tune to your preference. Radios, mostly EPAs and steering trims if I need to. Sometimes throttle expo/curve (or throttle EPA) if I need to slow down the throttle action so I can be more consistent. And since I have some PTSD from using radiolink in the past (tagging @CJSRCLIFE here) I often use RSSI/Range test settings just to be safe.

Probably the best place to start is to sit down with radio and ESC operator's manual in hand and read them through. Even now after twenty plus years in the hobby I keep them both close to hand when considering changes.

After that, my recommendation would be to leave either the ESC or radio at default setting. Adjust or change only the ESC or radio one at a time until you get a feel for what you want and what the changes do. Making changes to both can lead to confusing feedback on which of the two takes precedence over the other.

Depends, too, Retro on what you are wanting the RC to do. Off-road, on-road, carpet, crawling, drag, drift or back yard bashing? What is your power unit (e.g., battery, ESC, motor)? Brushless or brushed motor? What is your radio unit (e.g., controller, receiver, stg servo)?

Personally, I lean toward making radio changes to THR percentage and THR expo for tuning power delivery. Punch on the ESC I generally leave at default until changing the afore mentioned does not give desired results. Then I'll change ESC Punch and begin the process all over again.

Hope this helps. Kinda hard to explain. Just remember, the hobby is called 'radio control' for a reason. ;) Cheers. -AC
