Yesterday, I started my engine (using a starter box), it idled for 5 seconds, and then died. Now everytime i try to use it it will start up with the glow plug ignitor but die as soon as I take it off. Thinking i had flooded it, I did the unflood procedure and tryed again later, but this didnt work.

What could be the problem?

If it's a new engine you probably need to tune it in a bit. Find the instructions from your engine manufacturer and see if that helps. If it dies after you take the plug off I don't know what else to tell you. My HPI used to do the samn d@mn thing, but after I got it broke in and a few tanks thru it, it just started working fine.

Could be really rich on the low end or your glow plug is dead. Try a new plug and see if that helps.

How long do you leave the plug on after it starts?

I don't think the plug is the problem, because it glows bright enough.

I did notice this happened after i changed the brand of fuel to one with a slightly higher oil content, but same percent nitro.

If i wait a while and try again later, it will idle for a few seconds after i remove the ignitor, then stop. Then after that it will stop as soon as i remove the ignitor whilst pressing down on the starter box.

It is not old, it has probably had 1-2 litres through it, and still has lots of compression. It was working fine the day before.

I've often thought the same thing, but if it runs with the glow ignitor on it and then not, It is a bad glow plug. Also you need to retune an engine if you change brands of feul. I switched feul before and i had to switch to a medium cold plug to tune the engine right.

Did you try a new plug just to rule it out? Even though it glows on the igniter, that doesn't mean it's good.

The coil inside a plug has a coating on it (can't remember what it is), but over time it wears off. The coil may still be good and create the dead short so it glows, but without the coating, it's not creating the catalytic reaction with the fuel that is supposed to occur.

I always wondered how a glow plug worked after the ignitor was removed!

yup change the plug some plugs are lights up but not enough heat is produced..try to lean it out a bit too

Well, the heat generated from the 30,000 explosions every minute keep the coil red hot as well. But, it isn't just the heat that keeps it going I don't think.

Don't you hate it when you can't find an article that completely explains something when you saw it over a year ago? I also found a really good one explaining the tuned pipes on our RC's, but I can't find it anymore either!

could it be that you need a hotter plug?? Maybe the plug you are using is too cool and so it cannot keep the engine going when you take the ignitor off

Most of mine have been, if I take the glow driver off and it dies, it is too rich.
