Hi guys, first time posting after much much reading... I have been asked to replace team infinty .21 engine on a friends buggy but don't know them well (or at all tbh) are the fittings standard, ie same as hpi engines? He wanted to know if it is possible to run an hpi .28 or .30 instead of the team infinity... Any advice would be appreciated.

A .21 is more than enough for most buggies. The difference between the .21 and .28/.30 is that they have more torque and can't rev as high as the smaller motor. The .21 should use the same motor mounts, but I'm not sure.

Should fit fine, may just need to get some engine mounts for it depending on what exactly you buy... Be sure the exhaust will clear everything as I have no idea what it is, some require rear exhaust some require side exhaust because of other components in the way, as for the bottom end many or most are standard, I've yet to run into one that wouldn't fit all mine without optional mounts. Anyone else have an opinion? This is just my experience.

Thank you for the advice guys, I think it's probably best to stick with .21 then? Has anyone had much experience with Team Infinity engines? To me it doesn't look like the hardiest thing in the world

Just bc you stick with .21 doesn't mean you have to stick with team infinity. Tell us exactly what the buggy is your putting a motor in and we will be able to better help you.

.21s will typically have a higher RPM range and are better for running on a track. Bigger engines can be used assuming your .21 has a big block and not a small block footprint which is usually the case. The only thing you're gonna gain by going to a .28 is more torque but buggies arent heavy like Monster Trucks and what not and dont need the extra toque. If you just bash off of a track then you can use whatever size motor you want. if you use a bigger higher torque engine then buy a clutchbell with more teeth for more top end.

Thanks for the replies, have removed the engine and it turns out that it's a .18 team infinity with side exhaust and pull start. Not a .21 like he thought.
Looks like the crankshaft, piston head and sleeve are good but the glow plug thread in the burn room has been stripped... He swears he never over tightened the glow plug, might this have been caused by the piston hitting the underside on the glow plug? It doesn't look damaged but I'm thinking the conrod might be weakened?

If the head threads are stripped you will either have to get a new head or a new head button depends on the motor but be a good idea to pull the piston and sleeve and see how the pinch is to see if its even worth doing anything with

Also chased down what type of buggy it is, it's an acme condor 1/10 which has had far too much money spent on it... Basically aluminium everything, seems the weak link is the engine now?!
The pinch still feels good and I can't see any damage on the piston or sleeve, crankshaft looks good it's just the button on top that has been ruined... Really really odd...

In my experience it pays to go new but that's because I have the worst luck in the world lol. Heads are cheap and it may run a good long while or...it may not. That's pretty much up to you at this point. Conrods however are not so cheap if it does go. Kind of a crap shoot really at this point.

Team infinity call it the burn room but I would say it's the cylinder head, it sits underneath the cooling head and the glow plug screws into it.

Yea thats the head button I've never heard it called i burn room. they can be had for about 10 bucks depends on the motor for the price really tho.

When your remove the head you still have to remove what the glow plug screws into right?

Yeah I always called it the head button but apparently team infinity like to make up their own names for things! It's what they call in in the online catalogue which makes it really difficult to find! Thanks for all the advice though people, I really appreciate the help.

And Childresshunt, it does sit underneath the cooling head so only have to replace the button... Hopefully!
What does everyone think of team infinity engines? I've never met one before.

I've never had one either but if there is nothing else wrong with it and all you have to do is replace the head button i would run it like it is till it blows then upgrade

Good thinking Childresshunt, think I might just fix it up and let him run until its all worn out. Thanks again for the advice.

I dunno, just call me old fashioned lol. "Burn Room" it sounds like a new TV show on TNT or something lol
