engine overheating?

i was just running my rc10gt out in my backyard and i saw that the engine was smoking so i brought it in, not sure if the exaust was on tight or not i tried the spit test and of coarse it sizled away in about 2 seconds i also had alot of dead grass that the car kicked up i dont know if the grass was burning or if i was overheating if i was overheating wat could cause this??? i know that i am not running lean because i have more than enough smoke comming from the exaust if i ddnt see the smoke i would have gone even leaner

1st step get a temp gun. sounds like the cooling head was clogged with grass.

agreed on getting a temp gun, could be that your glow plug was loose and the nitro was the smoke that you saw.

from time to time some nitro does get somehow get out from under the glowplug but the thing is as tight as it can get and to make sure it was tight i added another copper washer

Maybe you have an air leak causing it to run lean

i tested for air leaks afew days ago and dont have any

It's summer time, expect your engines to run 20-40 degrees warmer....fact of life.
Running in grass that is anything less than perfectly manicured causes drivetrain resistance, thus causing more heat. Never run in tall grass, it's really rough even for an 1/8th scale truck.
Since you have no leaks and the engine was smoking good and performing, don't sweat it. Most engines can handle 280F running no problem as long as the tune is right.

yep exactly.. How do you check for air leaks?

i do need a temp guage wat is the normal running temperature for a .15 OS Max

There is no set temperature. Engines run where they run. Some run at 280F, some run great 180F. Good performance with smoke and no lean stutter on top end is ideal. Temps lastly. Good rule of thumb though is to keep it under 280F.

Yeah my temps are all over the map as well. My OS 21VG likes it @ 260 ish, my Revo 3.3 swears by 280, and my Force 26 was all about 250.

I'm running rich right now and i dont know exactly how lean to go it gets hard to see the smoke sometimes and i dont want to go to lean and ruin my engine

If it's hard to see the smoke...you're probably too lean. You should see a nice trail of smoke coming out at full throttle. Good test for it is stop the car next to you, go wide open and see if it bogs anywhere in the RPM range. If it bogs down low...lean your LSN a tad until the bog goes away. If it bogs in the middle or higher up...lean the HSN a tad and do more testing on it. When it's snappier all the way through....your running good. You could go a little leaner, depending on your temp from there to get some more power.

i have to go through and tune the thing might do that friday at the track i dont have alot of room out back to hit it up full speed
