well, I'm looking at used nitro's to buy and i was wondering about the average amount of nitro you use before your engine dies. i know tehre are many factors involved but i figured there must be at least an average if you take good care of it.

Well like you said there is MANY factors like Brand of the engine, how it was broke in, how it was run, the fuel you use, if ya use after run oil... etc.. My s-25 I broke it in proparly, always keep the temps down, used after run oil, placed cylinder at bdc, and I only got about a gallon and a half out of it.. But then I hear from members that its not uncommon to get at least 6-8 gallons out of it, so I'm guessing mine was just bunk..
What mill are you most curious about and maybe someone with that mill in here could tell you there average.

dunno what a mill is hahahaha I'm a noob to nitro. man i feel like an idiot. all i know is its on a savage 25

The s-25 is usually a very reliable mill, don't overheat it and do your maintenance and it should last...Unless you have crappy luck like Andy did. I have been reading this same question for years, you will have very wide range of answers from 4-14 gallons.

ok thank you. now just to make me feel better, would you mind explaining what the mill is?

the engine I'm asking this about already has 2 gallons through it

Got a link to the auction? Savages come in a few different styles. Theres the Savage .21 that has a .21 engine in it, then theres a Savage .25 that has a .25 in it, then theres the Savage ss 4.6 that has a .28 in it and the Savage X that has a .28 in it as well.
I personally would only buy a rig with a used engine in it from a member that I could trust. (Limits me to Rcnt). (Unless I planned on upgrading the mill anyway) I bought my Rs4 off of ebay and the guy said the mill had "tons of compression" and "had less than a gallon on it" but when I got it, there was ZERO compression.

I've read that a good rule of thumb is to anticipate having to replace the engine (mill) when buying used. If cost of used truck + new engine still seems like a good deal, then buy it. If the cost of the used truck + new engine exceeds the price of a new truck, beware. Lurking around a lot of rc forums, I get the feeling that a lot of used stuff is sold out of frustration. Whether that frustration was self inflicted or not is for you to decide. Has it really been serviced after every use? Can you be sure it was never overheated? Can you be sure it was broken in properly?
Just a few things to ponder when buying used.

My S-25 currently has 4 gal through it and still has good compression and runs strong. I keep it cleaned, tuned and the air filter cleaned but I don't use after run oil and I don't check it for BDC.
Like the others have said though, beware when buying used. You should at least get a no DOA guarantee or buy one you see and test first unless you just want to work on it.
