currently I'm running 5000 all the way around. I want to keep 5000 in the back but was thinking about running something lighter up front... whadaya think?

first buggy. I set it up per manual. there was a note in the instruction suggesting either 3,5,3 or 5,5,5. Since my LHS didnt' have anything lighter than 5, that's what I got.

oh, and what do you mean by overkill? overkill how?
 
I wouldn't run lighter in the front.......have you ever driven a monster truck w/ only rear wheel drive??? the buggy kinda steers like that when the front oil is lighter....I put my diffs in backwards once....front one in the rear and vice versa.....what a nightmare.....
 
Plaid - I think I kinda understand what you mean. would it make "return" turn response slower?

Revo Rancher- what are you trying to say? cuz to me it seems like you're calling me out.
 
not sure what the corerct term is...I just group it in the term "ass happy buggy"...when the stronger fluid in the rear keeps you locked longer than it should t causes you to break traction and slide out...if your front has a lower weight fluid then the one side will stop driving and creat a pivot point for your rear to come around on.....you want your front to pull and the back to have a bit of push....just not more than the front.......I want to try going the other direection and raise my center diff weight to like 9 or 10k.....and the rear from 1k to 2k.......and see how I like that...keep the drive onthe front and rear longer...you'd be able to break traction easy but you should be able to regain faster too......
 
ok, that clears up quite a bit. I'm starting to get a good idea of how all these diff oil weight affect it. I need to go get this thing on a track and see what it feels like. I don't wanna tear down a diff and change oil w/o knowing what it would do on a track. To me it sounds like lighter diff fluid in the front makes steering response quicker, but won't grip as well trying to pull out through the end of the corner. So quicker in but slower out? I hope I understand that right.. :)
 
yeah that sounds right cause it will release one side sooner so the drive wheel can do the steering but then you lose pul cause the diff will stay "off" drive to both wheels longer....have you ever played GT3? that game actually teaches you a lot about tuning vehicles in general...not the actual mechanics of it but rather what all the changes do to your car.....my roomates and I used ot go at it like crazy w/ that game, cause I understood all the tuning features and he was clueless.....after about 6months of him trying different things he finally got decent at it.....I try to get my dad into RCs cause he'd rock at tuning....he's got an ear for engines that I could only dream of.....
 
to be honest Plaid, that game is the only reason I know anything about the dynamics of driving :) Not saying I know alot, just that I understand it better when explained. You're first sentence is pretty much exactly the way I understand it. It seems to me that with lighter oil in the front, those wheels can change speed quicker because there is less resistance on each other, thus makes steering more responsive. but when exiting, the little resistance in the diff will keep one wheel from "catching up" with the other one. seems like we're on the same page. Is this effect the same with the rear? lighter oil will allow the car to slightly oversteer getting into the corner but won't allow the rear to get too much grip exiting so it doesn't spin out??? of course this is all assuming your off power getting in and on power getting out.
 
lessen thin oil in front means youll have good turn in off power, and one hellishly loose rear end on the power out of a corner, in theory you would have excellent straigh line acceleration, but will be pretty hard to hang onto
 
kewl, thanks MB! how would it be if I was turning in on-power? I know that defies logic but I'm just trying to understand this diff oil thing. This thread go derailed didn't it? lol, oh well. I'm guessing it would act as if I was exiting.?.? less grip.?.?
 
I thnk so...... If the front is not as locked up as the rear then your ass would overpower your head.....
