While I was clearing up my shed. I have accidentally dropped one of my Xmaxx 4S lipo from about 1.5 meters above the ground. And broke the protective wrap. Is it still safe to use with a bit of electrical tape around the area? Thanks in advance

It's all fun & games until you see the magic smoke 😉

You should upgrade to gorilla tape, too

Haha I’d rather not seeing the magic smoke in the first place. Have since bought a new one just in case. I have pried it open a bit and saw traxxas had actually put some foam in place and looks the cells weren’t touched by the drop… finger crossed

once a cell .a pack any lipo is disformed consider it to be a danger and dispose of properly.ASAP NOW.not worth the possible midhap they can cause in the long run or short
Yep, thought so. Good thing I have got another one coming now. Wouldnt wanna risk it burning up the whole truck

Or your house while trying to charge.

I think lipos are tougher than people give them credit for. That seems pretty mild compared to what I've done to some of mine. If you didn't see any real damage other than a slight dent it should be fine. I would keep it stored safely and isolated from your other batteries for a bit just to make sure.
I may catch a lot of flack for this but I've never seen a Lipo catch fire that wasn't shorted or punctured.
Your mileage may vary. Always good to be cautious,

I started out pretty cautious. I've smoked a couple now, and haven't seen the scariness as being fully justified. Keep your charging stations isolated and make sure fire can't spread from there. When a lipo goes critical, it ain't subtle.

Your nose will tell you if it's about to let the magic out, too.
I understand, and encourage caution, but they don't detonate. They smoke, fizz, and occasionally show flames. It's more than likely if it did decide to rupture in your truck that you'd be able to pluck it out before it killed the truck. Granted, I might be the guy posting about a catastrophic lipo fire someday, but you can't let the potential hazard poison your fun.

This whole LiPo thing you guys talked me into is kinda scary.
NO!!!!! don't be scared 😱😨 nothing to be scared of. They just need to be treated with respect and care. They are awesome batteries

Not trying to scare anyone. Or discourage any one from using lipos. But just watch this video. In the first minute or so. Watch how fast after the guy in red poop going down stairs before the lipo burst

Oh it's justified. Maybe more yrs ago when they first came out. But I'm glad you haven't had the full experience of a lipo failure. They are no joke

I'm willing to bet the odds of having a Lipo fire are less than being hit by lightning. With that in mind, I don't stand on the roof in a thunderstorm waving a tire iron over my head. Take proper precautions and use common sense and you will be fine. I don't hide in the house fearing lightning all the time.

@Pat_ranch we already know you are some sort of wizard, so we expect to see your magic smoke!

That stuff has some serious reek to it!

100% agree sir. Very unlikely. You are definitely more likely to get hit by car also. Like you said don't stand on roof swinging the iron around. Common sense goes a long way. Ranches pic was his way of showing his poof be gone wizard ways 💨💨🤣🤣
Dieing writing the roof bit good one👍👍

As long a the pack doesn't swell and the IR levels of the cells all stay fairly close to one another then it should be fine. I've had 6S lipos survive many 100+MPH crashes and live to fight another day.

I have a tendency to preach about safety with lipo batteries, never leave unattended while charging, storage charge,etc…..

Watch a video on YouTube about lipo fire, and you”ll see why…..

It ain’t worth it…….

BUT

IF you chose to try it…..stay close by the power cord,of the charger and make sure you have the battery in a metal container. Like @Doom! said, it doesn’t look overly bad, but for crying out loud,BE CAREFUL

The health of your lipos is all in the IR levels. You can take the guess work out of LiPos with an IR meter or at least a charger that reads IR levels. A dedicated tool is more accurate but the charger type will get ya close enough.
