We took my savage x 4.6 to the hobby shop yesterday and had them tune it. I think he tuned it to rich because it can't pop wheelies anymore. Also it kind of bogs down if you give it full throttle.

Yeah it is blowing quite alot of smoke. Should it be able to do wheelies on command? The hobby shop guy said it shouldn't.

Yeah, it should. Sounds like another case of a not-so-knowledgeable hobby shop. Set the hsn first. You want good top end, with a good trail of smoke. It should wind right out and shift well. Then adjust your lsn for a good take off. Adjust the needles in 1 hour increments, then drive for a couple of minutes between adjustments to let them take. Read through the tuning tips and tricks at the top of the nitro forum for more info on tuning. Extreme rc mods have a good explanation as well.

I told my dad that it's suppose to wheely. He said the hobby shop guy tuned it "Safely".

"Safely" is correct. Too rich adds unnecessary stress to the engine internals, causing pre-mature wear to the bearings and rod. Nitro engines need tuned pretty much every time they are fired up. You need to learn how to do it to fully enjoy the hobby.:)

M&M is correct. "Safe" one day may be slow and bogging the next. Nitro engine tunes change drastically with conditions. You really cannot tune it one day and expect it to run the same for the next two weeks. It's just not the way they are. Tuning for engine longevity is great, but that truck should still lift the front end with a proper tune. I think you'll find that most nitro guru's do not really agree with tuning "safely" as this is generally taken as tuning slightly richer than necessary in order to bring engine temps down and promote extra lubrication. However, as M&M explained that only induces extra stress on engine components. IMO, the only way one should ever tune an engine is to tune it properly. The reality is, a proper tune is a safe tune.

I have found the best way to tune an engine is to first adjust the LSN till it will idle for at least 20-30 secs with out dieing then to do some high speed passes or a couple of laps of a track and adjust the high speed so that you are getting good/top rpms. then I will re adjust the LSN to get good snap off the line.

Tuning by ear is much more accurate than temperature or smoke due to the different engines, fuels and weather conditions. You will want a nice clear tone all thru the rev range with no stutters or bogs. however the smoke is still a reassuring sight that it is not lean if you are not on the spot with the needles.

All of my engines will idle for and agers without loading up and dieing

here is your solution
