every time i run in the dirt my air filter gets so dirty it turns black. and tips on preventing this from happining?

but i thought that i wuznt supposed to do that because it washes dirt deeper into the filter? oh and thats wut I've benn doin but i just wondered if i cud keep it frum gettin so dirty

If there wasn't any dirt on it, Id be worried. Its doing what its suppose to do.

You can use prefilters but I use PJ-1 to clean them (available at any motorcycle shop) and use air filter oil for dirt bikes as well like Bel Ray or similar. It's the same stuff and you get about 100 times more for the same price. PJ-1 is da bomb when it comes to clean up.

i need to get sum of that. everything on my car is blanked with dirt before i even start it up lol

Cleaning the car is different, don't use the JP-1 on that. Remove electronics and make sure you're carb is covered and just spray it down with a solution of simple green and water maybe a little denatured alcohol, then blow it off with an air gun.

What's JP-1? I tried googling it but just came up with a bunch of sunglass references.

I use PJ1 filter oil that I picked up at a motorcycle shop though.

I am sure that he ment PJ-1 Probaly just a typo.

But as they was saying dirt on the filter is good, i wash the filter with some nitro fuel that way if any is left in the filter it wont harm the engine, and i then put some filter oil from the local motorbike shop on it, just dont put too much as this can be a problem.

Also if you are still using the standard filter think about investing in a better one as these make nearly 100% sure that no dirt is getting in, and it should also increase the performance as you should get a better air flow.:)

I use K&N air filter cleaner to clean it then oil it with PJ1. I do believe PJ1 makes an air filter cleaner as well. Any bike shop carries it and I've seen it at AutoZone as well.

Personally, I use dish soap to clean the filter elements...then I lube them up really well with filter oil. Seems to work just fine for me. :D

yeah I've been using soap + water then putting after run oil on the filter ( but I'm going to the hobby shop today and will pick some air filter oil up) and does anyone know of any links to where i can get this new filter??

You'll have to give me some more information...they make a ton of air filters to fit every size engine and make of RC. What size engine, and what kind of RC is it going on?

I use MotorSaver air filters and RB air filters. Do a search at Tower Hobbies and this link is what turns up:

Find one that will fit the neck of your carb and go with it. Any of the offroad ones of appropriate size should do the trick. You can go the extra step and by the mud/dust/rain deflector to keep the big stuff away (something I ran with when I would go mudding...see picture below.)

i think i have one of those covers its a plastic thing that goes over your af? and i didnt no u could run in mud/water i thought it would toast ur elctronics???

As my picture indicates, you can run in just about any condition...I have run mine in snow, mud, rain, etc. What you do not want to do is submarine your RC. If you are going to run in wet climates or on wet surfaces, take precautions to protect your electronics. There are a number of threads on this site that address that very topic. Please feel free to use the search function to find them.

And yes, the cover I mentioned is one that clips over the existing filter...kind of like plastic umbrella.

Use the search terms "waterproof electronics". And see what turns up. Make certain you are using the search link in the top tool bar of the forum, not the search this thread link.
