Especially a fellow that only ways 125lbs. With no experience, a 250 2 popper will probably hurt you. I have also heard that the manufactures are stopping production on 2 strokes because the eco nazi's piss and moan about the pollution.

yeah 09 is the cutoff date for production of two stokes...honda stopped a couple years ago.

If it were me id steer you twards either a yz250f or a crf250f. For a noobie its the perfect motor and is light enough to be forgiving. But heh no one listens to me lol, only 15 years motorcycle experince lol. If I can give you one good peace of info, go down to the local liquor mart and buy a dirt bike mag and a transworld motocross mag and start reading reviews. Its the best way to gain some knolledge.

Yeah, research is always your best friend. The new 4 strokes are rad too. Keep the oil clean and run good gas. Pretty simple.

there is no way that you can continue to run a 4 stroke for years without rebuilding the top end..go ahead and just keep riding them and when the whole thing grenads and is 2500 bucks i will be the first to say I told you so.. I never said a 450 was not surperior to a 250 two stroke... I said there are only 2 people in the world it really matters too... and IMO the last thing this kid needs is a 450.. u guys think a 250 two stroke will spitt him on his head... wait till the 450 gets away from him..gt a xr 400 or xr 250 you can run them for years and when u master those get a 250f or 250 two stroke...

ps have ur buddies check their manuals or call the dealer and see how many hours before rebuild..

all this dirt bike talk is quite amusing to me. I've raced on the amateur pro level for several years now and also have been a performance mechanic at a large local dealership for several years now. with that said the new 450 and 250 4 stroke bikes to require a lot more maintenance then a two stroke. look in any service manual and they will tell you to replace pistons normally 10-20hrs, crank shafts 40-60 hrs etc. even with a two stoke i replace my piston 15 hrs and cranks every year, due to the abuse it receives. I jumped on the 4 stroke wagon last summer and bought a new yzf450 and yes it was easier to go faster on but within one summer I went through two pistons and many valve shims which equals time and money especially if you cannot do the required work yourself. I'm back on my favorite two stroke again rm 250 and I can beat the 450's no problem but with the new ama rules for 09 i will be raceing against the 250 4 stroke bikes now which will be very easy. anyways 125's are good bikes to learn on and can be very potent in the right hands and are very cheap to buy now and maintain. basically don't get a used 4 stroke for your first bike because your getting what someone else has already pounded in the ground and will gernade and you'll be left with a huge bill for the engine rebuild also a 250 2 stroke is also a very bad idea, way too much power to get used too. id say get a 125 2 stroke or a honda xr of any size and ride that for a summer then move on. but i guess get whatever makes you happy but i hope you wear a quality helmet, boots, chest protector etc....

two strokes are only not being imported into the usa. they are still in production for the other countries though. suzuki and yamaha will still have them available here in the usa. also don't be to shy about that issue either because there is more then enough after market companies to buy parts from for them and also the manufacture has to carry and make parts for 10 yrs i think past the year of the model. buy what you can use at this point and ride the hell out of it till you need something better! I've seen to many kids get what is "cool" and get hurt really bad. its not too cool laying in the hospital

good looking bike chattin ! might wanna get a bar par for them triple clamps, saw i guy jam his chin into his top clamp like that, wasn't pretty.

It's been many moons since I raced motocross (80 & 125cc class ftw!) but I think Scott is right in suggesting an Enduro-type model. Street legal and still able to rip for fun offroad but they tend to be designed to require less maintenance than full racing dirtbikes, 4stk or 2bangers. My old '87 KTM 2banger 125 was very reliable but still required more maintenance than its worth unless you are racing or really heavy usage.

This is still going on? Lol, The CC of the bike depends on your size and what you feel comforable with, I remembered riding a 250 2 stroke, I loved the bike, Until I was in the trails, I could barley turn cause i was samller then.

I however race 85 class, I have a cr85r, well 2, and a yz125. The 85 is so easy for me to man handle, and just as tall sitten as the 125, and it will also eat the 125 alive. but beings both 85's are race bikes, they invovle rebuilds, witch can be costly. The 125 on other hand is nice cause its a smooth ride, not so loud, and doesn't invovle as many rebuilds.
