The glow plug is "like" a sparkplug, but works in a different manner. Where a sparkplug has wiring to ignite it on the proper stroke, a glow plug is basically designed to remain hot so that it can ignite the gas when it compresses. A glow ignitor is a battery that you place on the glowplug to energize it and get it glowing hot. That way when you turn over the engine there is heat in the plug to ignite the gas. After the engine is running the heat of combustion in turn keeps the plug hot so you can remove the glow ignitor.
