I used to be into car audio really big until my two JL W6S woofers got jacked.

Now I'm looking for something cheaper, maybe around $100-$150 per sub. 12 inch.

Problem is that I haven't been around audio in YEARS. I do not know what's up and coming, affordable and sounds good enough for someone who just wants more oomph.

Any ideas guys ?

My car stereo is only on because I have to be in the car to get somewhere. I don't get in the car just to listen to the stereo.
🤪
I think I might be an old curmudgeon!

Huh, I have been out of the audio scene for a while too. I remember it was Focal and Rockford Fosgate but, the Fosgate stuff was declining in quality. Some of the best sounding subs were a duo of Kicker's in 8" and 10" that I built enclosures for. I had them in a Dodge SRT-4. Tupac's Ballad of a dead soldier has never ever sounded better than from that pair of subs. I don't know if it was the 8- and 10-inch combo, the boxes, or even the amount of stuffing in them... the way that song hit was just impressive. They were just some Kickers from Fry's.
I just took a trip down memory lane fellas.

I may be more old curmudgeon(er).
80% of the time I drive in silence.
20% is audiobooks. 😜

I only listen to my car stereo when Mrs. Doom isn't in the car. She listens to that icky country stuff. I like real music. Factory stereo sounds pretty good though. My hearing is damaged enough without helping it along.

I have been wearing hearing aids in both ears for the past few years... paying for having a shooting hobby and not always wearing ear-pros the 5 years of my USAF career I spent working on the flight line.

I'm still a big car audio guy. I was a professional installer for about 15 years. Just installed a bad ass system in my sons truck and I'm about to do one in my daughters' car.

What size amp are you using and what kind of a box are the subs going in?

First off...what kind of vehicle is it going in? Do you also need a Amp and enclosure?
It's going in a 4 door sedan. Will need amo for sure, hole set up. I'm looking for 2 12s. Nothing JL expensive, but not Sony explode cheap. Something with quality without breaking the bank

I'm not sure yet I'm still looking to build it. Basic 2 12 setup in a sealed box, probably a monoblock or 2 channel.

If there's room for dual 12's, there MUST be room for dual 18's!!! 😉
Its been years but I installed a pair of RCF 18's in the back of my Intrepid. It was almost loud enough. 🤣

It has been years since I built an audio system but fun topic to read about again!

Good luck!!!

The pricing is not to bad on those so I'll be looking more at these when I get awake, thanks !
I'm pushing a single 12 kicker comp in a Q bass enclosure with a stinger 750 mono amp and it sounds incredible... having a hatchback helps as well lol. there's nothing but solid reviews on the new stinger stuff and it's relatively cheap!

Good looking speaker. My old ears can't handle the loud thumping music any more.
My stock stereo in my Tundra sounds pretty good.
Well those are Orion HCCA 12 subs and those are very expensive, top of the line. I just added that photo for some flare

The Stinger amps are good amps. They are made in China, so I'm not sure about reliability. Many people swear by them, but they have had the amps for less than a year. Precision power has a pretty decent amp. It's the A1800.1D and the PC1800.1D. The PC1800.1D is the high-end amp and is on sale for the same price as the A1800.1D. Thease amps might cost a little more money, but they are Korean made amps, which are known to be more reliable. They have a few hundred watts less than the Stinger MT2000.1, but they will still give you what you want. Another budget amp to look at is the Taramps HD2000. It puts out what is says and it pretty inexpensive. However, it is also Chinese made, so reliability is questioned.

Subwoofers are a really hard one to pick, if you're not 100% sure of what to look for. Power will give you sound volume, while Xmax will pressurize your car. Of course, there are a slew of other measurements that need to be taken into consideration, but these are the two basic ones. The Kicker Comp Q sub handle 1000 watts and has an Xmax of 23mm. Those run around $340. NVX has a VCW 12" sub that has about the same measurement's of 1200 watts and 23mm of Xmax. These subs run for about $240. Both are great subs that will pound the crap out of your car. They also fit in a relatively small box, so 2 will fit in your trunk. It will be a seal enclosure with a total of about 2 cubic feet.
