After having successfully (I hope ...!) completed the engine run in on Day 1, it was on to Day 2 ... where all didn't got so well.

I put the High Speed carb pin at 2.5 turns as per the instructions for a rich fuel mixture. Primed the engine with fuel by pulling that starter cord with my finger over the exhaust. After putting the glow starter on for a few seconds, I pulled the starter cord. Nothing. A few more attempts and a bit a head scratching a still nothing.

I left it a for a minute or two and tried again. This time she started up and idled fine. However as soon as I removed the glow starter the engine died. I repeated this process a number of times each time leaving the glow starter on for longer, but everytime I removed the glow starter it died. I tried also increasing and decreasing the High Speed carb pin but still to no avail. Fuel was being spit out of the exhaust if this provides any further clues, but not a great amount.

The only way I managed to get her going was feather rev the engine with the glow starter still on (with the High Speed carb pin back at 2.5 turns) for a while.

Is this what I should be doing or have I missed something?

After this everything was ok and after a few tanks had her leaned out to 1.75 turns and running great!

Thanks for any help!

P.S It was a sunny day with the temp around 10 degrees celcius.

Looks like you fixed your own problem. You experienced what I went through during my break in. What happened was you had too much fuel going through and it was blowing out your glowplug. By leaning it out a little bit, you cured your problem. The tell tale sign was the fuel being spit out of the stinger. You were too rich

Most likely, the glow plug is going bad. Usually, a glow plug will not last much more than than run in session. This is due to the overly rich settings fouling the plug. Replace the plug, and all should be well.

By the way, where are you located? The location you have typed looks like Pattaya, Thailand.

NA...that sig is just sick man!!! lol

Knight, I had the same problem when I was breaking in my LD3. I found that if I leaned the High Speed Needle to 2.25 instead of 2.5 it helped alot. I ran 3-4 tanks at idle letting the engine cool between. On the 5th tank I leaned it about 15-20 degrees or about the distance between 12 and 1 on a clock and it started up just fine after that and stayed running through the rest of the break in process. I dont like to touch the throttle during the first few tanks because theres always the chance your going to open it too much and prematurely wear the piston/sleave.

Nitroaddict: I am located in Sunny Madrid here in Spain!

I'll try the following:

- I guess I'll start at 2.25 turns instead of 2.5 for the next cold start and see what happens. As a rule of thumb for a newbie: If fuel being spit out of the stinger at idle then the mixture is too rich. The cure is to lean the mixture.

- Glow plug could need replacing after run in. I'll check this when I get a glow plug wrench. Can you believe that the shop was all out of them!

Thanks for the replies.
