Finally, In NJ all fire arms must be LOCKED (as in with key or combination lock) in a CASE (soft or hard doesn't matter... felt bag = no) in the tunk or rear of the vehicle if the vehicle doesn have a trunk (Jeep Wrangler). Ammunition must not occupy the same space as the firearm unless it is also LOCKED in a SEPERATE case. Firearms cannot be loaded under any circumstances. Firearms can only be transported from your place of residence to the place you intend to use them (target range, hunting grounds, etc) You can actually get a ticket if your found say with your handgun in its locked case on your way to work cause your going to the range after work. I only know this because I got one. Fun Fact: In NJ, a state of over 8 million residents, there are only a little over 3000 CCW permits and most are held by retired LE.
That is about the same as CA, then. If you are going hunting or to the range, ok to have in car. Plain sight or in glovebox or middle console is a definite No-No. Even with CCW, it has to be on person or in plain sight. Most states have their gun laws spelled out on the DOJ website.
