RC Driving Style
Hello all, I am a previous owner of a t-maxx 2.5 a few years back. I got tired of all the problems with that truck and took a little vacation from the hobby. I have heard many good things about savages, expecially the 4.6 and SS. I am currently broke(I'm 17 go figure) so i will need to save up for this next truck. The biggest bang for the buck is what I'm looking for. I am mechanically inclined but i have not built a kit before. My question is: do i go for the 4.6 rtr or the SS? Again, saving money is a big thing. It looks like for about 450 i can get setup with the RTR but as for the SS i am not sure. I do have an older tamyia electric car that came with a radio. I will post pics below. Could i salvage this radio and only need servos to have a running truck? Or would it be obsolete? Or just dont hassle with all of these things and get the rtr? This truck will be strictly a basher and all i want is a solid truck that will be running whenever i feel like driving it.

I'm not sure what all that radio does (EPA's, trims...). If you still have the receiver, I'm sure you could use it. But, radio's aren't all that pricey these days. You can get a decent FM for $100 that will do all that you will need.

Regardless which way you go, servo upgrade would more than likely be in your future.

If you use this: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wto0450p?FVGCNUM=011JX

You can get the savage X 4.6 RTR for $419:

But, if you factor in fuel, stick pack for roto start, charger for stick pack and a 6v receiver pack, that's another small pile of $...

Regardless what you buy, you will end up needing fuel, receiver pack, receiver pack charger and a glow heater.

Personally, I'd go with the kit, get a decent radio for $100 and get decent servos that will last a decent amount of time and are strong enough to do the job well.

Your best best would be the Savage X RTR here at TOWER HOBBIES . I am not saying that you are not capable of the kit but your budget is low and the RTR would get you going. If you do get the Kit, Olds as stated above, would be better since you can drop in your own gear.

The stick packs will be good for a Roto Start if you go that direction. They would be a tad bit...way to big for the receiver though....:) I built a kit but (XSS) however I do like the 4.6 RTR. It has a lot of good bells and whistles on it that used to be all upgrades.

Seeing that you already have the batt. for the roto, you don't need to worry about spending extra $ on that.
Should be simple...cost is an issue, so go with the RTR, buy fuel and a glow igniter and your bashing.
Go with a kit and your looking at $100 for radio gear, all of a sudden your truck price just went up $100 bucks.
Personally the RTR will be just fine, a lot of guys are upgrading servos....well I've had my savage X RTR since its debut early last year and the thing is unreal! I haven't had a single problem with the servos, nor would I ever consider upgrading them from my experience so far.
Maybe something to look into when money is not an issue, but your running strong, cheap and reliable with a RTR.

I would have to agree with you Boody. YOu can't go much wrong with a Savage X. Check out the price diff on the standard X and the X 4.6 RTR.....

is there a big power difference between the motor in the 4.6 RTR and the SS?

actually both have the 4.6 big block. I personally don't know the power difference between the F4.1 and the big 4.6? I would be interested to know though.

The 4.6, being a .28 is going to have a little more grunt than the 4.1, which is a .25. I have the F4.1, and can tell you, it's an awesome motor. The F4.6 sounds like it's the motor the Savage has been designed for.

I've been trying to blow up my F4.1 engine but the thing just won't die! its an awesome engine!
I would love something bigger...of course.
maybe a .32???

I'd go with an RTR if cost is an issue, you can always up grade in the future.
