So i have this 2006 chevy silverado 1500hd with a weak sauce 6.0 in it. I can get a tuner for it for $50 but i believe our trucks are being replaced at the end of the year. Anybody think its worth it for a gasser? If nothing else i am sure i can get more than $50 for it when they replace the trucks.

Thoughts?

The tuner won't do as much as a diesel, but for $50 I think you'll get your money's worth. Depending on how it tunes though you may end up being required to run premium fuel only.

Yep, probably around 25 hp or so, and I know at least with the Hypertech tuners, premium fuel is a requirement.

My buddy used to drive a 03 3/4 ton chevy with the 6 liter in it and he spent a few hundred bucks on a chip through a 4x4 customizing shop and although it had a noticable amount of added torque, it cut his mileage almost in half no matter how he drove it.

this is a 1/2 ton and i get 10-12mpg no matter what. I babied it and kept it under 55 for a full tank and got 14. It wasn't worth the driving style and i spend way too much time on the highway to be running that slow. Not that i pay it, but the fuel bill is between 600 and 800 a month.

On of the biggest "mods" you can do to help with the performance is mess with the shift points in the tranny. The tuner will help you chance the air/fuel ratio but find out if that unit will let you reprogram the trans controller too.

supposedly it does a screwball job of removing torque management. It basically cheats and removes it completely instead of recalibrating it. Either way i am cool with a firmed up tranny. It shifts ok now but it seems like it eases into gear. I would prefer it shift quick and be done with it.

Just be very careful what tuner/chip you use. Some of the cheaper priced chips out there just advance the hell out of your timing by tweaking the timing tables, or even worse, interfere with the AIT fooling it to believe that it is colder outside than it usually is, therefore advancing the timing. Too much timing+cast pistons=holes in pistons. My advice would be to call a good company that offers hand held tuners. They can give you a HH tuner with a tune already on it.

Second choice would be a cam with a tuner. If you go that far, a 5/7 swap cam will do wonders. Seen LS based engines pick up 75-100hp from a 5/7 cam and chip. If that's not enough, bolt your favorite 10lb bottle in the bed, or behind your seat.....well, you get the point.

for gas they are great tuners, i had a diablo on my explorer. made a nice difference. I need a new bullydog for my truck.

yeah i think i am going to grab it. use it for a year and then sell it. i am sure the bay would gather at least $100 for it

WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT.....Are you buying this thing new, or second hand?? One thing i know about some of these tuners is that they LOCK on to the ecu of the vehicle it was used on first, therefore you just might have a nice paper weight.

It really sucks when the one thing you know about something turns out to be wrong. I have used 3 separate programmers on my last 3 vehicles and as long as the vehicle is returned to stock, the tuner can be used on any supported vehicle.

Majority of the tuners are able to go vehicle to vehicle. as long as the one before was returned to stock. I've had a 98 chevy z71, an 03 explorer sport, and an 04 hummer h2, that have all been programed, de programmed, and sold and used on another vehicle.

Sorry, just trying to help out. Just want to let you know that the diablo that i used on a 03 cobra then returned to stock could only be used on that cobra and none else. Hypertech max energy e-con used on my ranger, then returned to stock, could not be used on any other vehicle.

I hope it works out for you.
