I would have to say it is covered with some sort of thin layer of mortar and then painted.

I plan on making a course of my own using a similar method.
 
Rob, I think you did great. It appears that Jake's has a comp every month, so I'm thinking that most of the guys that you were running against had been competing for a while and had picked up on some of the tricks that come with experience, and also have been competing on that same course for a while so they had gotten to "practice" basically by trying different lines each month as they were competing. I know it was a different configuration, but with it being the same panels, you will be learning a lot as you get used to the course.
