Hi,
I was hoping to get a 4000mah 8cell NiMH for my slash, will that toast the ESC or overheat the motor?
I read that it could but I wanted to be sure before I get one:).
Thanks a lot,

The Traxxas XL5 can take 8 cells.

XL-5 SPECIFICATIONS
Input voltage: 4-8 Cells (4.8 to 9.6 Volts DC)
Case Size: 1.23"W x 2.18"D x 0.61" H
Weight: 2.44 Ounce
Motor Limit:
15-turns* (540 Size)
12-turns* (550 Size)

I run an 8 cell 5000 mah Nimh in my Velineon setup all the time it will handle it and the stocker will too. If you are running the brushed motor it may get a bit warm just check it but if you are running brushless it is no problem at all as long as your gearing isn't too crazy high.

any suggested brands or battery size? Like would a 5000 8-cell be a good match with a vxl on a slash? what kind of speed would I be expecting with the standard gearing?

Venom batteries are cheap and decent, expect a 5-10 mph over 6cell, if ur running a Titan, keep an eye on it. You can jump to lipo, better response.

Yeah if your serious about it youll want to go lipo. Quicker response and they run the same all the time (You dont have the drop in voltage as u run) it wil cost a little for a charger and batts but in the end u will be satisfied. 2s is all u need, but if your esc will handel 3s WOW! Its up to U their are plenty of chargers and batts out their @ reasonable prices, and nimh will do just fine for bashin in the backyard or racin @ the local track. But when u are slowin down others wont be. Good Luck

I wouldn't recommend Venom NiMH cells if you're running on a brushless system. I don't mind them for a brushed setup but they have bad reviews for brushless as the motor requires more current, which the cells can't typically provide.
