I'm in the midst of trading for a mini Recon RTR and I'm curious about gearing in general. If/when I decide to put a brushless system in this I'm curious if I have to regear because I'm going from brushed to brushless or would I be alright using the brushed spur/pinion combo that came with the truck. Not only for this rig but I may end up doing this for a couple others over the winter months (Slash 2x4, Evader ext) Also curious about the KV# that comes with some of these brushless kits. Is it the higher the KV# the more power or the other way around?

The higher the KV the more RPM and lower torque.

The lower KV the more torque and lower RPM, meaning you can gear up to match what a higher KV motor would do on the car.

Depends on your goals for the car.

You can start with the gearing that is on it now and just monitor your temps. If it starts running to hot then drop a couple teeth at a time off your pinion until it stops overheating. If it doesn't over heat then you can slowly increase the pinion size until you home in on the right set up. Go for a motor that is middle of the road in terms of KV. then you have more room to use gearing to tune in how much acceleration or top speed you want.

I wouldn't recommend converting the mini Recon to brushless because of diff problems that other members here have had with theirs.

The Associated RC-18t2 is stout and there is of course the mERV and the stuff based on it.

I'm actually trading for it with the radio I won from here during the 10th anniversary. They are both new so the trade isnt lopsided by any means. I wouldnt mind a Merv but they are considerably more expensive than the Recon or even the 18T.

gearing

What's going on guys, I have a question. I have a mini recon with a brushless 5500kv motor. I modified a main steel gear from the Rc18t to fit the recon. It's a 57 tooth gear. What do u think the ideal pinion gear would be? I'm running a venom 20c 2000 mah 2s lipo bat. Any help would be great. Thanx.
