Just seen a video on youtube for break in. Is it advisable to put a few drops of after run oil into a new engine before doing a heat cycle on it

i use marvel mystery oil for after run oil. and my i idea is, its ok to put after run oil in any time you think so. about 3-4 drops at a time then turn the engine over, do NOT use mmo in the fuel. i break in a engine by just let it idle for 2-3 hours. i know that way is not recommended, but it works for me

I always used the heat cycle for all my break ins, I have never used the idle method, but its all in what people want to i guess.

Letting an engine idle like that does not break them in. Come on Moe! You've been around long enough to know better brother.:) Heat cycle all the way, any brand engine. I've had the same bottle of rc specific aro for years. Think it cost five bucks. It would never make sense to me to use anything else. Haven't heard a good reason to yet.

the reason i did the idle way is that it was 40 f out side and i didnt feel like being out side. so me and jack sat in the cab with the heat. i have used the heat cycle way before. and its good. NOTE: i dont realy drink. it just makes a good story.

Iknow this may sound stupid but I'm fairly new and still learning. How exactly does the heat cycle work and how long should it take?

generally get it started, go through a tank just going from 1/4 throttle 3sec to brake, and do it for a full tank. and 2nd tank 1/4 for 5sec and brake so on and so on, by 3th tank 1/2 for 5 sec and brake, 5th full throttle for 5sec and brake. and then 6th tank, crackin into 2nd gear and only for 5-10sec and brake.

its something like that. can't remember exact times/throttle. just check traxxas revo 3.3 break in procedure and it will tell u. but its close enough to what i just said.

that sounds more like the traxxas method of doing the break in....which reall is similar to what i would describe as the heat cycle method only real difference is the traxxas method doesn't mention the heat part of the heat cycle...lol
the heat cycle method focuses on getting the engine to 200F the letting it cool and repeat...you do want to be gentle on the throttle at first progressively getting more aggressive with it and tuning it in....after 8 or 10 times of cycling the heat to 200 you should be getting close to a good tune and can go ahead and dial it in and start running it....thats the way i understood it anyhow....i wouldn't take my or any one persons word for it though...go to the sticky and read it....and every other tuning method you can find and go from there....i have noticed that most people really have their own variation of a break in method....but it seems the heat cycle method is the best...

Heat cycle is the way to go. Just finished breaking
In my clocked JL.21 and it was on the pipe yesterday.
The motor screams

To heat cycle: Warm it up to 200-240F and run for 3-4 minutes going easy on throttle, then let it cool to outside temp w/ piston @ BDC, repeat the process about 10 times. Monitor the temp and don't let it get above 260 or so (shouldn't unless way lean) and always make sure piston is at bottom when cooling. Run the engine rich for break in.

Most important thing is to warm it up before you start it. Try and get to at least 180F before firing it up. Use a blow dryer or heat gun (or engine heater) to get it up to temp initially. Trying to start an engine cold puts lots of stress on it, especially when it's new.

take the glow plug out and its when the piston is at the bottom of the cylinder

iWhen i shut it down and begin to let it cool how do i just take the glow plug out and look in. if piston is up do i turn the wheels to get it to go down?

You will need to turn the flywheel. I wouldn't take the plug out of a dirty car to check BDC. Mark the flywheel, and do it that way.

The main thing is to get the piston out of the pinch. doesn't have to be perfect. Rotate the flywheel until it gets hard, then back it off til its loose.
