I try to avoid it. You can try and wrap the head, but the couple of times I did try a sub 40F break-in, they ended with an engine that had weak compression in the warmer months. They usually became my "winter" engines after that.

If it were me, I'd break it in, but start saving for a summer engine and keep this one as your winter engine.

Although, depends on the engine... what engine is it? $150 or more, I'd buy a cheaper engine for winter use if possible. No point in harming a good solid engine.
 
If you must do it, plan on having it as a spare. It's almost impossible to break it in right when it's 25 out.
