Hey all. I have a Traxxas Maxx 4s, and I want to use a BLX185 I have laying around with the stock motor. What would I lose by doing so? The AVM? I want to have one charger, battery size, and connector for all my vehicles, thus my motive.

Also, I was thinking about changing out the receiver and transmitter, because as far as I know I cannot change the throttle percentage on the fly with the stock transmitter. I have two Arrma rigs, and I like to be able to change power from 50 to 75 to 100% on the fly. Would I lose further capability if I switch to a spektrum receiver and transmitter?

Interested to hear people's thoughts. Not really interested in 4S versus 6s debate, just the technical aspects of if this is possible and what are the benefits and drawbacks.

Thanks!

It should work no problem and should give a slight performance boost, make sure the motor bullets are the same as the ESC bullets. If it fits, it should work fine.

You'll lose a little on the servo strength as 185 has 3 amp to 20 amps on stock.. so holding a torn will be difficult.

How do I matched the motor bullets? Isn't the Arrma color code different from the Traxxas color code? Also, will I lose "active vehicle management" (if I even have it now)?

That sounds like a huge difference. How noticeable is it?

You won't lose TSM as that's in the TX/RX not the ESC. The color codes should be similar, just plug them in to see if they fit.

Is the VLX-4 actually the same thing as the VLX-6? I saw a post of the Traxxas forum that claimed the stock VLX-4 in the Maxx is really just a VLX-6 and can therefore probably run 6s completely stock. Can anyone confirm?

Don't do that, you'll probably fry the ESC, the VXL-4s is rated up to 4s and the VXL-6s is rated up to 6s. Also, they look way different. Misinformation spreads quickly...

Thanks pug for all the help! You really know your stuff!

I'm still unclear on the bullet connectors; is each bullet a different size, and so will only connect to the right receptacle? I assumed all bullets were the same size, and that since there would be multiple possible combinations, I would get something wrong and fry the motor or ESC. Sorry for being dense lol.

The 540XL motor has 6.5mm bullets and the BLX185 has 4mm bullets, so it won't fit without changing the ESC bullets. Since you wanted to use the same connector on all of your RCs, you could just switch the connector on the ESC to whatever connector you use. You could also switch the bullets on your ESC to 6.5mm bullets, both ways require some soldering to be done.

Oh I see. I'm ok with soldering. How do I know which connector goes to which? The traxxas motor has black, blue, and white, but the BLX185 has blue, orange, and yellow

It should be marked A B C on the motor and esc, if not, match up blue to blue, white to yellow, and black to orange, if it's reversed, switch two of them to see if it rotates in the right direction.
