So I am contemplating putting a bigger engine in my HPI nitro MT. On hobbypartz.com I saw a vx .18 engine. It is pretty inexpensive was wondering if anybody had experience with the VX and if this motor would fit my HPI MT?

I think vx are what smartech uses in their rigs. Personally, cheap or not, I wouldn't buy it.

Save up for something strong and reliable like and OS 18 CV-R(X).

Had a MT2 with the above mentioned motor and it was a blast to drive. My only issues were the gearing was limited and with only a 1spd tranny it tops out pretty quick as far as speed goes. it could pull a tree out of the ground with the excessive power it produced just wasn't very fast. Also keep a couple of spare diffs on hand. Anytime you upgrade the motor you have to be willing to upgrade the balance of the driveline to support the extra power.

Honestly mine came with the 15fe which had to go. Since I like hpi I decided to try the hpi 3.0 (.18) and holy crap it shocked me. It has so much torque my diffs instantly poofed into a million pieces. I had to upgrade the whole.drive train which I knew before hand but anyhow...I am now a big fan of that engine.

It has a broad powerband so its strong at all rpm's and they are cheap on eBay. Also one of the easiest to tune I've ever had.

I know its not the "cool one" to have but I don't care what names stamped on it or where it was made lol, it thrashes 3.3's all day with less displacement.

I flipped a quarter on mine when I got the OS18cv-r for my nmt, between it and the HPI 18. It seemed to hold up ok to me driving it. I had issues frying spur gears and snapping arms more than anything else on that rig. Always contemplated upgrading it to MT2 spur assembly, but sold it before I got that far. I wanted an MT2 when I bought it, so got rid of it before I paid retail for a used MT2 that I built. lol

Lol I upgraded mine fully to mt 2 and it wasn't cheap, parts are hard to find. I still have it (in 3 pieces) but the 18 is still fresh and man it violent. Can't keep wheels planted on any surface with any tires. Love it lol
