This is directed to everyone that doesn't ride a motorcycle.

PLEASE watch out for bikers! Never assume they see you.

Last night I lost a very good and close friend of mine due to a motorcycle accident. He was one of the most cautious and safe riders I know of. Seems he was merging onto the interstate, after dark in Texas, and didn't see the semi. I can only figure that he thought the truck lights were city lights. He merges right over in front of the semi. His death was instant as the semi run him over and the driver never seen him. He was a great guy that did alot of charity biker runs. The kind of guy that would give his last $5 and the shirt off his back, but also the same guy that wouldn't take any lip. He was called "Scrappy" for a reason...lol

He was married but no children but I do ask that everyone keep his family in their thoughts and prayers.

Above all, please share the road and keep an eye out for bikers! All too often I have had people not even look before they pull out in front of me. Or even better, be on the phone and look and pull out anyway.

R.I.P. my brother...you will be missed greatly!

Sorry for your loss. RIP to him. Happens FAR to often too.

Very sorry to hear that, NB. Being hit by any vehicle while on a 2-wheeler of any kind really sucks (I have the scars to prove it). It's really tragic, especially since TX-DOT is running a campaign on that very subject. It's all over programmable signs here.

that is a bad thing. in the late 60 a friend and i built HD choppers. for money. i did love riding. but in one year 4 friends spent way to much time in the hospital. so stopped ridding. so DO look out for riders. AND bicycle riders.

Really am sorry for your loss, so don't take what I have to say as otherwise. I rode for several years, and have lost several friends on bikes. Every time I've gone down, was my own fault.

Every crash involving a motorcycle with the exception of two, have been the motorcycle riders fault. While I truly believe that cars/trucks need to be aware of their surroundings, the bike riders need to be more so. I have had several guys on bikes cut me off in my jeep then turn around and flip me off and start yelling at me for almost hitting them. There is even one documented occasion that I had to draw down on a motorcycle rider after he merged into the side of my jeep (hit the rock rails, no damage to jeep) and he went down. I pulled over to check on him, and he came after me with a tire iron yelling "why the f didn't you get out of my way". He went to jail.

Point being, you directed your post at people NOT on the bike, when unfortunately the bike was at fault in this case. And while it a terrible thing for the riders family and friends to be going through, think of the driver of the Semi, who did nothing wrong, and now has to live with the knowledge that he killed someone.

EVERYONE needs to pay attention at ALL times.

I am sorry for your loss and this happening to your friend and his family. Stories of this nature are the reason that I am done riding. Now that I am almost 60 yrs old, I make mistakes on a daily basis and my judgement is not what it used to be. It's bad enough that I have to watch everyone on the road that is not watching for me, but when it gets to the point that I can't trust myself, it's time to give it up.

Thanks everyone for the support.

Alpine, Yes I did direct this post to non-riders for one reason. As a rider, i'm always on the lookout for bikers...because i ride. Back before I was a rider, i never give it much thought, but now, i take take the time to look twice. As far as who was to blame here, I never blamed the semi driver, I really thought that was obvious...

Seems he was merging onto the interstate, after dark in Texas, and didn't see the semi. I can only figure that he thought the truck lights were city lights. He merges right over in front of the semi.

And yes, I'm sure the semi driver feels like poop because of it. I don't doubt that one bit, but it wasn't his fault.

All I was trying to bring up was the need for people to watch out for bikers. I don't mean kiss their asses and all that crap...just be aware of the surroundings. I've had a few that thought I should yield to them and they had the full time right of way...guys like that make you want to run them over for basic principle of them being idiots.

No disrespect was intended in my previous post, my friend. My main point being that no matter what you are in; bike, car, truck, hovercraft, flintstone mobile......... You need to always pay attention to your surroundings and everyone else on the road.

I ride as well (primary means if transport when not with my family) and am always sorry to hear this news. Thoughts to the family.
