I dont think that you broke any rules... just be careful how you word things... I am notorious for being very vauge and very dry in my posts...... all in good fun... but i would not want to see you on vacation for 2 weeks....

From the rules:

No racial or other derogatory comments are allowed - RCNT welcomes everyone of all colors, ethnicities and backgrounds. If you decide to particpate in posting ANY racially or derogatory comments you will be banned for a total of two weeks, a second instance
will result in being permanently banned from the site and will never be welcomed back.

Not stepping on any Mod toes..... but just wanted to put that out there before someone says something they do not think is wrong.....

Man, you must have been at that job since the days of Mork & Mindy were still on the air as "newshows" instead of re-runs! Because ummmmm, nevermind ...

Funny you should ask this question (I Had a recent experience with this)

For the kind of job you are going for you will need to shine over the competition. They will be looking for a Bright, well spoken person that not only will be able to learn and follow directions but will also be able to think for them self and stay within the set guidelines of the job.

The only way you have to show them this in the short time is to be clean, well spoken, good hand writing, and to have an air of confidence.

When asked a question that deserves a yes or no answer, answer with a yes or no. When asked for details on something keep it short and to the point, don't wander. When asking them a question make sure its open ended, short and to the point.

DO NOT....
Ask about brakes, vacations, pay raises, or anything not directly related to the job tasks.

Good luck on applying for your first job. Believe it or not, at this point selling yourself is more important then the job itself. If you can't sell you, the job isn't going to happen.

That is advice you can take for any job application, whether it pays $5 or $50 an hour

1) Don't turn up looking like poop.
2) Don't turn up smelling like poop.
3) Don't turn up an hour early
4) Don't be late.
5) Don't be too confident.
6) DO be confident.
7) Speak clearly.
8) Don't tell huge lies. (little white ones are ok, most people fib a bit in interviews)

Nah man, those vacations are fun! :D

BTW, great info guys! I've been making all my money on my own for a few years and need to get a 'real' job so this stuff also helps me as well.

It's been so long since I looked for a job that I didn't remember most of this stuff.....

If all th is stuff doesn't work then slip the mngr a note saying if he wants to see his family again he must hire you...and pay double.....but that's just a suggestion....I do find when someone asks what the pay for the position is (do this after discussing your end of the deal), shows someone who is living in reality...I see too many people I've interviewed just accept the job and never question what's in it for them.....It shows me they are willing to be led and I would never recommend them for managerial positions.....that's just my 2 cents on what questions jump out as being important.....don't be pushy about it but make sure you ask before you accept the job......

There are No Dairy Queens in NYC that I'm aware of.
My kids have never heard of it.

Just my 2 cents.

There is one in the bronx.

I just went on a interview on Friday.

Dress up. Dress dhirt, tie , slacks and a jacket if you have one.
Firm hand shake and eye contact is a must.
Brush your teeth because smiling and laughing at their corny jokes is a must.
Look confident and be confident. You want the employer to KNOW that you are the one for the job and they need not look any further. Make sure you use all of your manners. Dont wounder.. dont let your eyes wounder if the person is good looking.

Umm thats about it. Good luck . I hope we both get these jobs lol.

Hey, I have a quick Q...I was planning on trying to get a job at best buy, but I heard today that they changed the min. age from 16 to 18...anyone know anything about this? (or if it's even true?)

Yeah the best buys in Mn are all 18+ too. All the Electronics stores like that are in mn. So if they steal stuff they can actually press charges on them.

Although I will tell ya, her discount on some things was practically stealing! $300 car stereo for $180. $100 speakers for $30. $130 surge suppressor for home theatre for $25.....

and yet there are employees there that will steal the stuff still.......some people just don't get it do they?

okay as a recruiter here are my 2 cents. now i've hired well over 1000 people in my day ranging from low level techs, to janitors to CEO level executives.

EVERYTHING starts with your appearance. Make sure u are clean cut, period. Shower, shave, brush your teeth, make sure your shirt, pants and tie are pressed. wear dress shoes, or good clean casual shoes. NO SNEAKERS. Nothing looks worse than a wrinkled outfit and sneakers. i don't think u need to wear a jacket, but thats your call. Most places like fast food places or retail shops will interview u right on the spot, so i would go dressed the right way from the start. Even if u don't get an interview that day, you'll make a good impression. If u interview the same day, ask questions about the job itself. Personally, I feel no question is ever wrong...including pay and vacation questions. to me it shows u are forward thinking and not just looking to get a job to kill time. Ask questions, like "what will be expected of me" "Will training be provided to learn their cash register systems" "How many people on a shift." Are my hours fixed, or will i work days and nights" ALWAYS show that u are flexible in what they want.

As for how to behave in the interview, always be respectful. show respect to your elders since 90% of the people u will be dealing with will be older. remember u will be representing DQ and that what they want. If the interview goes casual, maintain your respect and do not answer in slang terms. Use your education. If possible, make reference to a prior job or school project where u served in the same capacity as the job. that will show some experiece. if the interview is in an office mimick the interviewer. if he/she sits back in the chair, u do the same. if they fit on the edge of the chair, u do the same. if they cross there legs....u do the same.

Lastly, when the interview ends, ask the interviewer if he/she has any last questions for you. if no other questions, ask for his/her contact info. this way u can rach out to him/her directly to say thank u. OH, 1 last thing, some how mention that u are available to start right away and who ever mentioned the finger nail thing...u are 1000% right. make sure ur nails/hands are clean and pop a breath MINT NOT GUM before u go in...

Hey guys, bringing this thread up from the dead.... When this thread was made, i was later told that they werent hiring at the time.

Now about 6 months later, my friend that has good connections with the manager told me that they are hiring and no one his age works with him and it gets boring. So I went and applied on saturday. Everything felt right. On monday, I called back to check up on my application.

I was expecting one of those, "We havent seen your application yet, and were not really hiring for a while anyway" just a round about excuse for we dont want you.

Instead she said she was there until 4 for the next couple days so I should come in for an INTERWIEW!! I was so excited, but stayed calm.

I went in for the interwiew today and everything went better than I thought it would. She said being 14, I wont be working much week days but come summer time when Dairy Queen is very busy I will be working lots more.

Now I dont have to do as many random jobs for money and support RC's and other activities.

I just wanted to say Thank you to all that gave me tips, whether it was 1 sentance or 3 paragraphs, Thank you.
-Pat
