Anyone own the Traxxas Slayer? Thoughts? Likes? Dislikes? Thinking about picking one up in the next month or 2...like the speed and the size and the starting system.... TIA

Dan

I have 2 friends who just bought them, and they seem pretty good. I wouldn't personally buy one, just my preference. However, they seem quite durable, and they're a fast truck. They do pretty well on a track, and can take a decent bash. The one thing about them is that they roll over, extremely easy. If you take any turns to fast, or make a sudden change in direction, you'll roll over.

humm...the rolling over part doesn't thrill me...and most of the running i do asks for tight turns...i bid on a Revo so might get that just to mess around with..thanks for the response!

ditto on the roll, i am almost done adding sway bars to my slayer we will have to see if it lessens the body roll. i also added a rear spool but have yet to try it. i really like the truck it bashes ok and it climbs alright. i like it better than the 1/8 buggy i had. the only real downfall i found was a lack of tire selection, but i have 17mm adapters and 1/8 buggy rims/tires on the way so that sould open up more possibilities

humm....good things ot think about...i may get one in the future anyway dependng on what running i do..for now i have my 1/8 buggy and the Revo I just won on ebay plus my old trusty HPI super nitro rally for road use...my fleet gets larger by the day :-/

I own a Slayer, and in stock form its a great off road truck. On road though, best be ready to spend alot of time on your lid. Its made for off-road. Its very durable though. So far most of my problems have been engine related and caused by user error. Great R/C truck though, especially for the scale look.

I race mine and they are a blast to race if you can get multiple Slayers together. I would suggest going for stiffer springs and thicker oil on the shocks, getting the center diff and rear brake kit, getting 17mm adapters cuz buggy tires are the way to go, sway bars are a must (use the Tekno kit though if possible), and thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

I had one for while. Converted it to brushless and ran a MM/BEC setup with a NEU 1515 1y on 4s lipo. This is a link to the coversion thread. http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17454

Speed was excellent, performance was fine, it really wasn't for my style of bashing which isn't anything special in itself. Just four wheels in contact with the surface unless there a jump. I just like something that is more stable. Made a great drifter on ice but spent to much time on its top. I did all the suspension tweaks and got it so it was decent. I had all my extra revo parts out and was about ready to convert it to the revo but I sold it instead. It can be a decent basher and it does takes some time to learn how to drive it. It's not a wot basher, you'll need some finesse to tame that rc from rolling over. The swaybars are a must, should of came stock with them. I went with different springs an shock weight. Can remember which but the 4s lipo and Neu motor added wieght to the already heafty fellow. I tried buggy tires, 23mm Badlands, and some truggy tires off a strr. The strr truggy tires were pretty good on it for what I was doing. Was just the right amount of sidewall and worn down enought to let it slide instead of flip over all the time. The thing come out of the box so squrilley it looked like it is going to just flip over on it top every time second gear kicked. I don't race so maybe it is a good truck to race with but I was disappointed considering the price I paid for it. They were just coming out with it and all the dark sectret were yet to be discovered about it. But now that it's been out awhile and all it's cards are on the table. I probably would of still taken the chance on it just to be able to write up a reply like this someday. When people write that it is on it's lid alot. Take that as A LOT of time on it's lid at first. There will never be a lack of used slayers be sold. I didn't get very much money back for what I had done and what shape it was in. It's part of the hobby but the other rcs I've let go brought back more of my initial investmetns then the Slayer did. In hindsight I really didn't spend a lot of time with it. Things might of turned out differently if it was my only RC but I tended to hang with the ones that were more fun. Order your sway bars so you have them before the slayer arrives.

very cool info....thanks.....for the running i do i think the Revo i just picked up will be better....no tracks or any type of organized events near me...

I have a bid on one on ebay I always wanted one since they came out to go with my T-Maxx that I bought a couple of months ago. Now that it is, shall we say on the injured reserve list, I think it will be fun to drive something new. All the info you guys have given should help me a lot. I guess I'll find out in a few days that's if I win it.

Well I won the auction and the Slayer will be here Monday. Guess the next thing on the list will be swaybars. Probably some stiffer springs too. I'll just have to drive it and see how she does. I can't' wait to get it here, I'm like a kid at Christmas!!:D

Ok I got the slayer and my verdict is..... It sucks!!! This thing is the worst handling RC that I have ever owned!! I got so tired of running after it to flip it back on its wheels that I didn't even finish my first tank of feul. Not a total loss though, I'm gonna build myself a really nice Revo out of it.

damm that sucks....seems to be what i have been hearing all around...my Revo is pretty damm cool i ended up getting....if you have the funds to convert i'd do that...

If you really want a Nitro Short Course truck, I'd recommend the Associated SC8.

cool a$$ vid...but as far as these trucks are concerned that is the exact environment they are supposed to be run in..slippery dirt...these seem to flip and roll on grass and other higher traction service...

Ahhh, it's mainly the Slayer. It's top heavy. I run a Slash on Brushless Power, and I barely traction roll, even at full speed, trying to turn. Now my friend's Slayer... he slows down completely, turns, and still rolls. The Associated SC8 on the other hand is highly stable. I've seen videos of people on pavement, drifting them!

I am for sure going to convert mine to a Revo. Actualy it will be a hybrid of the two I'm going to keep the front and rear bumpers from the slayer on it and will probably go with a proline hardcore or desert rat body. The rest of it suspension arms, axles, pushrods, toe links, and wheels and tires will be all Revo so it's gonna look like a Slayer on steroids.

Guess i'll find out soon enough. SC8 is my next purchase after my Tmax...

The only problem i can see with the slayer is even if you manage to lower the ride height and drop your CG you are still darn near as tall as you are wide as far as CG is concerned they are a relatively tall truck compared to track width so your bound to be flipping over all the time - traction roll being the main culprit. I have sway bars, the rear brake kit, and the center diff to settle it down and it still rolls very easily while bashing. I am sure they are much more suited to a softer, loose dirt track to get tail happy like the real guys.
I am just waiting on some parts that i couldn't turn down to get me well on the way to a revo conversion for my slayer. Might end up selling the slayer and picking up a Revo though, not sure though time will tell. Snow is still flying haha.
