Any unusual kit models out there?

Hi guys, I like the look for the FTX DR8, but I think its going to be a bit too large at 540mm long that's going to make a very large van or car even!
Also having watched a couple of videos on this model, does it come ready built? That would take quite a bit of the fun out of it for me.

I think I may have to look at 1/10 scale and accept that I will be needing another, motor/ESC/battery setup, a shame but I think I'm likely top end up with a more manageable model.

Mind you at 1/8 scale that's going to make it easier to create fine detail.

If you want a kit these days, to do what you want to do, you're likely going to be looking at a race grade chassis. And that gets expensive. What I would do if I were you is make a heavy duty chassis plate as you have been doing with the tethered cars, and use bulkheads and a center diff/motor mount from a kit that you can buy as individual components. To recreate Wheelie Yellow's weeble wobble driving characteristics, you're going to want a heavy chassis to keep the center of gravity as low as possible. With your ability to fab something up, that's where I'd be heading.

I suppose I assumed that all hobbyists rc cars had to be assembled, like my Tamiya Baja bug from the late 70’s, I quit enjoyed assembling ‘spannering’ all of the allow parts together. I completely understand why modern plastics are preferred for durability and cost.

To be honest, I’m not adverse to buying a completed pre built car especially as my budget is limited, I was just surprised to see the car come out of the box built!

Just get a 2wd stampede, pull all the links out of whack and add a tad bit of weight above the chassis. No acting needed. 🤣

Ha ha! I noticed that too @Doom! and the answer is a clear Noooo!
Awe come on man. I'm sure you learned a bit. One more try and you'll nail it. Plus, you don't need windows. Do an apocalyptic Ice Cream truck and just put bars there with spikes all over it 😅

Really, you would find thinner lexan to be much more forgiving 😉

I did wonder if it was worth creating a former, lay the plastic over it then pop it in the oven?

There's an idear 😉

That would give it a more even heat.

So is that van body something you can build? Or buy? I think that would make for a very cool, and VERY comical RC 😄

Just an idea at this stage, I would have to make the body shell which would be quite an undertaking, but because the purpose is to 'parade around the track' rather than actually race, it wouldn't need to be as robust as a normal RC car, it could be made from wood, shaped and painted to a good finish.

I am not wedded to the Wheely Yellow concept, but i would like to make something that is fun and comical, preferably something that others will recognize. I quite like the idea of buying a chassis and building on that, I prefer the look of the FTX DR8, chassis compared to a monster truck.

It might be fun to provide some animation too, so for an ice cream van, it could play the chimes, pull up and a man leans out to hand you an ice cream cone. I'm currently thinking there are other iconic vehicles like the Cadi from Ghost Busters, (really tough one that) or perhaps a dog van from Dumber and Dumber? or a smoking van from Cheech and Chong's film? I am sure that there are loads of ideas that I need to work up.

So I'll probably buy a 1/8 scale chassis, accept the running gear and build a shell around that hopefully with some animation going on. I do think that 'Tow Mater' has stolen that crown though, it is brilliant!
