Some may have seen I recently purchased a used xmaxx for $350 off marketplace. The guy said the esc was dead. I’m finally home and after doing some investigating I’ve found the esc is perfectly fine, ONLY when the steering servo is unplugged. As soon as the steering servo gets plugged it, it immediately kills power to the esc. So I’m assuming the steering servo is just bad? Any help is appreciated!

Servo is either junk or drawing too much current.
Does the steering operate smoothly ehen the servo is out? No binding?
If the servo is stock and causing brown out, the servo is likely the issue.
If its aftermarket, it could just be too big for the esc and require a bec to operate correctly.

It has no binding of the gears inside the servo and all the steering on the rig itself is fine. It’s just a traxxas upgraded servo, 2085R rather than stock plastic geared servo. Never had this issue before. I’ll try to new esc and see what happens I suppose. Maybe the 2085R is causing a short somewhere along the line. It’s all used so hard saying what was done to it prior to me getting it

It’s probably the servo or your radio. Make sure you have the esc and servo plugged into the correct channels.

It would more than likely be just as Mike said - a bad servo. This is a pretty common symptom when a servo gets fried from overheating or getting wet.

There is an optional servo bracket to use standard sized servos in it. And there are plenty of standard sized servos out there that are more than strong enough to turn the wheels of an X-Maxx.

If the esc works without the servo, replace the servo. The stock upgrade should not be pulling enough current to shut down your esc.

Cheap stock servo replacements @ jennys if you're still really unsure. 👍

I appreciate everyone’s help and input! It was the steering servo that was shorting out. I also found that the tires were very very full with water. So after finding that it’s safe to say the servo was probably soaked at some point. I did drill some holes into each tire tread and gave it throttle to spin some water out of them. Made a significant difference!
