This may be a stupid question. But what is better about getting new, more expensive servos and transmitter and reciever. Why are they better than stock? And should i look at new gear?

Most newer electronics will give you better range, as well as:

Servos
* torque on upgraded servos for steering, possibly for braking (although it doesn't take that much torque for braking)
* metal gear servos for steering
* faster movement speed on upgraded servos
* digital servos

On radios - the length of the list is eqaual to the cost of the radio it seems:
* synthesized for easy frequency changes
* adjustable endpoints
* programable saved settings memory
* 3rd channel if needed
* steering rates
* program mixing
* Throttle automatic travel limiter
* failsafes
* servo position displays
* precise trim adjustments

the list goes on and on

Depends on what you buy.

I know it doesn't matter for me what brand/type of radio I use, but I've never gone over a $100 radio. I've had a traxxas qt3 (or whatever it is with the 2.5 maxx), JR XR2 (AM) and what I'm currently running, airtronics MX-3 FM. All of them get the same crappy range which is around 100 yards. But it seems to be mostly due to where I have to drive. When I was at my parents (middle of podunk IA), I could drive further than I could see... they are near nothing but corn fields.

Here in dekalb, I get glitching periodically and a 100 yard range typically. Must be a lot of radio waves floating around...

The reason I say it depends is because I know from reading that the spectrum module system and nomadio system goes really really far. But they are both above the $300 mark I believe. Nice radios, but more than I need by far.
