4x4 vs 2x4

So I'm in the market for a nitro rc. I've been looking and doing a lot of research. I am gonna be mostly bashing and running on my own track and maybe a small amount of racing for competition! What's the pros and cons of one over the other.(2x4 vs 4x4) I heard 1/10 scale races are more 2x4 and 1/8 is more 4x4? As I'm not to worried about racing which would be better for bashing? Grass, dirt, mud, rocks, gravel, ramps, etc... Also, why would one be more in one scale vs the other? Why not 2x4 and 4x4 in both scales?

4x4 is superior all around imo. The handling and just basic drive-ability is night and day over 2wd. Usually you can get better performance too with the added traction.

You can find a 2x4 and 4x4 in every type/class of vehicles in every scale as well. If you primarily bash IMO 4x4 is your safest bet of not getting stuck and hung up on anything.

4x4 is definitely the way to go. I would stay away from belt driven 4wd touring cars because rocks do find their way into them causing a complete stop at times. Yes there is more maintenance with a 4x4 type of rcs but the driving pleasure out weighs the maintenance. For a beginner if you are I would recommend a monster truck because of its versatility. The savage, tmaxx, revo, mgt and the Losi trucks are very good. Just make sure you go with an established rc brand like hpi, traxxas, associated and Losi. The other brands you'll find on the net like exceed and redcat I would stay away from because the quality is not there and generally the parts support is weak.

When I said that I was refering to buggy class racing. 1/10 scale buggies tend to be 2WD and 1/8 scale buggies tend to be 4WD. If you start looking out side that class then there are 2WD and 4Wd in both sizes like Phins said.

4WD is better IMO because they handle better but 2WD can be fun also. If your bashing 90% of the time it doesn't really matter although the 4WDs will typically be more expensive. The only thing that might end up mattering is if you buy something your local track isnt racing so as I said before check and see if what you are wanting to buy is being raced there. If it is then no problems if it isnt then you'll either be bashing it 100% of the time or you'll need to find a different kit to buy

If your looking for 2x4's and 4x4's you are on the wrong forum, try Home Depot. JK, 2 wheel drives can be very fun, unlike 4x4, they take skill to drive. It's way more of a challenge to maneuver a 2 wheel drive rig.
