I have an old traxxas 4-tec in almost mint condition and i am gonna turn it into in track/drift car but i would manely like to turn it into a drift car. I want to do an engine swap and i am confused on what motor and esc to buy. i have about $160 to work with

Drifting is not expensive. I would go with something simple, like a stock 27 turn motor (I liked my P2K2 when I was drifting). Any ESC would work pretty well - preferably with reverse. I wouldnt spend that $160 on it, do the motor for $30 and an ESC for around $60 (the Novak XRS looks pretty cool).

Isnt the 4 tec 4 wheel drive I know the nitro ones are is it the same with electric? If so I would disconnect the drive for the front wheels otherwise the front wheels will keep pulling the car out of a slide, with just the rear wheels spinning it will drift way better and then you can use the steering to control the slide.

dont disconect traction from the front wheels, drifting is always better achieved with an awd car, watch the 1:1 scale pros drifting, they use awd skylines...... you would be better of getting yokomos drifting tires.......
a drift with an awd is far more controlable than on a rear drive car
just my humble opinion

Do NOT disconnect the 4wd. The power to weight ratio of an RC car is rediculous compared to 1:1. If you have just rear wheel drive, you will pretty much be just doing donuts (if you are running ABS, PVC, or other drifting tires). Maybe if you were just running rubber tires you could do it with RWD.
