Hey lads and ladies,
I’m branching out from crawlers and looking to get into a bit of rc drifting. I know a little about crawlers, and nothing about the other so to avoid making the same expensive mistakes I made on many of my crawler builds and journey, I’m reaching out here before commiting to any purchases on the drifting front.

I’m about to commit to purchasing the rhino racing RTS 1/24 drift chassis, after a little research and some advice from my LHS guy. But before I do, can anyone give me a reason not to go with the rhino? I looked at the onisiki options and thought they looked cool, but the advice I got was to go the rhino purely because the motor sits low and to the rear as opposed to high and above the rear wheels on the onisiki options, which apparently gives better feel and encourages a more aggressive initial slide.

my next question is what electronics do I opt for?
I’m leaning towards the furitek hellfire 4500kv motor and microboost esc but again, total noob, I’m open to any suggestions. As far as gyro goes, I have no idea, but from what research I’ve done it seems like the reve d is a good option, or futaba although the futaba requires a matching futaba transmitter to gain full access to tuning but I’ve already got a FS gt5 transmitter running my 4 crawlers and I’d rather not have to invest in a new transmitter and receivers for the crawlers if I don’t have to.

And finally, steering servos. Are they any different to a crawling servo? Can anyone recommend any brands/models?

Would it be wise to keep brands the same across electronics? Reasons for and against?

And if anyone had any other advice, or any tips or things I should look into I would really appreciate it.

First of all, welcome to RCT!

Second, my drift buddy has about 14-16 1/24 chassis in his collection, the Rhino was one of the few he got rid of. He said it was very heavy, and very fiddly to work on compared to other chassis out there. BM Racing, TG Racing, Drift Art, etc all make popular main stream chassis. You also need to decided if you want belt drive or geared drive. Both have pros and cons.

Drift servos tend to be tuned differently (damping, return speed, etc), so I would recommend one. My Drift Art DA 4 is running a 5500kv setup, and I'm happy with it. My take is that you don't have to use all the motor you have, but you also don't want to end up wanting more too soon. As for gyros, most of the smaller cars then to run a RX/gyro combo setup due to the lack of space for electronics.

And be warned, this stuff is SMALL when you start working on them. I highly recommend a magnifying hood for working on these, along with somewhere padded that traps anything you drop. Otherwise, if you drop something, it's likely gone for good. LOL

Is weight an issue? I can see how it would be I suppose, if the motor wasn’t powerful enough to push it around, quality of driveline parts, and distribution of weight would also have an effect on performance too, but I wouldn’t have thought it would be too much of an issue with 1/24 scale as I’d imagine even a “heavy” chassis would still be quite light. I’ll look into that a bit more though, and I’ll check out the makes you suggested too.

And I wasn’t actually aware there were belt drive chassis either so, more homework haha. Could you give me a brief explanation of the differences/pros/cons? A starting point?

I’ve had a little experience working on 1/24 scale RCs, they can be quite fiddly haha, I enjoy the challenge though.
