I just picked up my first nitro truck last night, a Team Associated RC10GT. Picked it up used from someone and it looks like it has some work done to it. Not exactly sure what's aftermarket, and whats stock.. Anyways, I wanted to know if they make a 2 speed tranny that'll bolt up to this thing?

Another quick question, Is it normal for the bell housing on the trans to go outta whack? There is the big gear, I assume is the clutch, which goes into a smaller gear. The smaller gear looks to be "off center" from the trans. I'm taking it up to a hobby shop after work today, but if its something I can fix myself I'll just order the parts.

Also, I see these NIP 4 in 1 clutches all over, is this a worthwhile upgrade?

Thanks everyone.

To my knowledge, there is no 2 speed trans for the GT. It was built to Racing standards and rules. It can be a very wuick little rig though. It is pretty durable in my opinion, but not a tank.

The little gear you speak of is called a clutch bell. Is it off center, like the bearings inside are worn/blown out? The spur gear (big gear) has a slipper clutch on it. It is not the main clutch, it just helps you fine tune the torque put to the ground.

Great. I figured there wasn't a 2 speed tranny for the truck, I didnt see any in my searches. I took it up to my LHS and had them fix the bearings (yes, the bearings were MISSING from inside the clutch bell)

As for the spur gear, my buddy was telling me that the little screw with a spring on it should be very tight. I didnt believe him, as the more we tightened it down, the less it would want to idle when not moving (the clutch was partially engaged, causing the wheels to turn) No matter, I had my LHS install the NIP 4 in 1 clutch, and fix the bearings. He's also regearing it for more top end and lubing/cleaning up a few things. The guy I bought this off of had it sitting in the garage for over a year, so it needed a little TLC.

Seems like a pretty nice little toy though. Hell, I only paid $100 for it, and I think the work I'm getting done to it today is only going to cost me around $30.

Any other recommendations on parts to put on this thing? like I said, I dont know exactly what has been done to it yet, I'll take some pictures later today. Its just going to be a toy, I dont plan on racing it.. at least not right away.

Thanks for your help!

For some reason, I have had bad luck in the past with the AE clutch bell bearings. They blew out rather often, and was a shame, because they are some of the more expensive bearings out there. The spur gear slipper clutch should NOT be tight. It is there to slip, and to help relieve some of the pressure on the transmission gears when there is a bad landing or something like that. You can also tune it to keep the wheels down and whatnot.

I believe the process for the slipper clutch is as follows :

Tighten the nut so that the spring is almost all the way compressed, then back off 1/2 turn. Then tune from there. In my application, where I have all metal gears in the transmission and heavy duty stuff all around, I need to have it tightened all the way, because the engine is so powerful, it will not do much when it is loosened. But for the smaller engines, it is recommended to loosen it a hair.

The first upgrade I would do is RPM rear bulkhead, then RPM A-arms. The RPM turnbuckle ends are also really nice. Personally, since it is used, I would tear it all down, rebuild the shocks, make sure there are no bent hingepins, turnbuckles, or shock shafts. Then get a screw kit, and replace all of the screws with fresh ones that aren't stripped (also a good idea to keep spares), clean everything up, lube it all up, and put it back together. Get to know your car.

The nose tube braces like to bend as well, so check those out.

Whats the deal with this "Stealth Tranny" i keep reading about?

The stealth tranny is just a name AE gave it, I think. There may be a different reason... :juggle:
