10 year old car, what to do with it?

Evening!

I'm new to the forum here and I've been reading around for a while but I decided it was about time I joined yourselves.

I've just gotten into the hobby as I was clearing out a cupboard in my parents house and found an old nitro car my sad hasn't used in a while in which he said I could keep. It starts fine, the only thing is the controller has what seems like a loose connection in the battery compartment but I'll sort that.

So my main question is what parts are most likely going to be needing replacement or not up to scratch or needing maintenance?

Also, as it's so old I am looking at getting myself one but I'm torn between a monster truck, car and buggy?

It will mainly be used for car parks, grass areas, Tarmac etc and the possibility of going over things and down potholes safely in a truck are getting my attention at the moment.

I am a complete newbie and just need to know the basics

Chances are a 10 year old car is not worth restoring unless it's a model that's around today that's popular. For example: Tmaxx, Savage, some Ofnas and a couple others. By the time you upgrade the electronics to at least fm, upgrade the servos if need be and do other upgrades, you're pretty much half way to a new rc. Just a rule of thumb IMHO buggies, truggies and stadium trucks are mainly for racing. The short course and monster trucks are what you're looking for based on how you're going to run it and tend to be the choice of people looking to just run or bash. Touring cars are nice but running on road can get boring at times. I hope this helps and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to RCNT. Post up a pic so we can see what ya got. I have several 10 year old rigs I still run, T-Maxx, RS4 3, even my Savage. So there are rigs out there that would definitely be worth fixing up.

Yeah - even if there is not parts support, you can still make it better with common 'enhancements' such as oils, bearings, tires, servos, engines, pipes, etc. These are not really specific to any vehicle and make a world of difference. It won't be a new car, but it will have your stamp on it....and that's a big part of what a lot of us like to do. I love restoring vehicles ;-)

I agree, restoring old RC's is a kick in the pants. Especially if you can
adapt some modern components to it. But, as mentioned before, it all
depends on what make and model you're working with. Some just aren't worth fixing.

Thanks for all the replies gents. I've managed to get some photos of the car and it appears to be protect judging by the remote and the casing. Obviously seen better days but I'll post up now

What should I change/clean/check after years of non use for better efficiency?

Preassure test the fuel tank ,
Check the glow plug make sure it works,
Your gunna have to clean the tank with fresh fuel and also cycle fuel through the engine and carb,add some fresh batteries and make sure all electronics work, at this point you wont be out any $ if the glow plug has no glow and you know the igniter works your gunna need to buy a glow plug, if you buy a glow plug you might as well buy new fuel line whyle your there

Runs what seems like perfect to the untrained eye. Cleaned out the fuel tank and have had it running so presume that's an okay on the glow plug. What do you mean by cycle fuel?

I meant basically just clean the internals with fuel but it sounds like the engine is doing that fine on its own, let it run a few mins and shut her down repeat a few times to get her all clean internally

The only problem I had when running was it kept stalling after a few minutes but then it sort of sorted itself out and ran fine until my controller started playing up.

Is it a good brand. Decent car worth looking at restoring?

I've been looking at a conquistador monster truck ATM as I'm more likely to use it off-road than on road. Cheap and what seems cheerful

I'm not sure what model it is, its been a long time since I've seen that exaust but it is really familiar, I would just run it as is dude, as for a mt there are much better ones out there

It's just budget at the moment.

Took the car out again this evening and it lost reception sigh the control at full speed and it ended up pretty worse for wear! Fuel tank snapped off and front end is a bit bent up, noting I can't fix though!,

I feel it's sympathy! Although due to its bad behaviour it may well be locked up for a while again!

I've had a few myself, a return spring, and setting up the fail safe will prevent these!

If you're running the stock AM radio, you'll need to buy and external unit. If you're using a newer 2.4Ghz radio, the failsafe is part of the binding process.

I've got an old set with crystals so I take it that's not the new 2.4ghz setup?
