Mattyfats go ahead and post the pics. I'm very interested in this taking apart thing cuz my cousin's melted down and microsoft won't help him. His Xbox's life is your hands.

I've sent 3 back already.....I pretty much play COD / rainbow six and Skate only on mine....the ring of death is covered for 3 years.....call them ASAP (like today)

I wouldn't count on teh paint but you'll probably get free microsoft points and Xbox live membership cards.....make shure you keep your box where it can get good airflow...I set up a few PC fans on the back of my entertainment unit so all my electronics get fresh air in and out of the cabinet.....

the only reason I bought a PS3 was for the next Gran Turismo, but it's not coming out (the full version anyway) til next year.....super starduster is cool on it too....

one thing i noticed with the xbox360 over heating is do not stand it up vertically. you loose massive cooling from the bottom enough to cause solder to melt together inside. what i do is stand it up vertically the other way for maximum cool. and i would recommend the nyco triple fan inter cooler to anyone with an x box 360. anything to help cool down your x box is a good thing.

pics soon to come for fixing the red ring of death. as long as your board isnt fried yet you should be able to de solder than re solder the melted joints

I just want to put this out there, but I have heard of several instances where the intercoolers caused problems with the 360. I don't know why they would cause problems, and it seems to me like a good idea, but I have heard from several reliable sources that they've caused some problems. I don't use them because I have the newer processor and haven't had any trouble with mine over heating, it runs for days at a time as a media server and with games.

My son bought one on Ebay for $50 that was suffering from the 3RLOD.
I took it apart and replaced the Thermal interface compound with some Artic Silver 5, put a divider between the CPU and GPU fan shroud so more air could get to the GPU and I replaced the heatsink hold downs with my own creation.
It worked great for almost 14 months. It just died a few weeks ago so my sons bought a new one. Much more quiet and cooler.
GHM

The newer ones that have HDMI do indeed run quieter and cooler.

I have one that has suffered a 3-ring death that I need to get rid of. I have another that is an earlier model that has not suffered the 3-rings as of yet, but I don't use it anymore since I inherited the latest model with HDMI that I use.

my first one crapped out too. got the new falcon one and its been rock solid.

the older ones have a 2xx watt power supply and the new ones have a 175 (i think). i know its smaller.

my friend has the elite and it red lighted on him a few weeks ago....just to let everyone know the newer ones apparently aren't totally safe from teh red ring of death....

rob you should call that number I posted and send the red ring one back.....they send the box for you to ship it back to them in....you couls sell it here or trade it for some cool R/C poop.....

I will do that.

Might as well sell the working one I don't use as well. It's not doing me any good sitting in a box.

Well called mikeysoft today. There sending me a ups guy to take my toaster away. If they find it was a faulty unit they will send me a new one and refund the original 500 buks. BTW those fan things are crap. They use the power for the xbox and don't give the unit enough juice.

No there sending someone to pick it up. If they find it was a bad unit I get a new one AND $500 back cause I still have my recipt

So you are getting a replacement as well as $500?

This would mean that you would essentially be getting a free 360 since they replace the broken one AND send you $500.

I think you may have misunderstood. I can't imagine any company/business replaces a bad unit AND spotting the customer the value in cash money. Just doesn't make any sense... especially a money hungry company like Microsoft.

I agree.

If that were truly the case, every 360 owner would wrap their 360 in insulation and turn it on hoping for the red rings of death so they can send it in for a new one AND $500.

Well, if it is a new unit and $500, is there a new rc in the plans????
