Will someone explain the "turn" rating on motors for an electric newbie? 17T,12T,20T I'm lost, must have taken a wrong turn at Albuquerque

BTW, I've got the RS4MT running and I'm wanting more speed which is the root reason for the question. So if you want to give some recommendations on a motor.......

Thanks
Randy

The lower the number of turns the "hotter" the motor. As the turn rating goes lower the overall power of the motor increases, they draw more power from the battery, they turn more maximum rpm's and they produce less torque.

This is why crawlers guys use high turn motors such as 55 or 65T. They don't need a lot of rpms, just a lot of holding power.

In racing, "stock" is generally 27T and modified is pretty much anyting lower than that.

These numbers are all brushed numbers. Brushless turn ratings are different but the same rules apply.

A good way to look at it is that the higher the turns on the motor the more torque it has and the lower the number the more speed.

then you mix in single, double and triple wind motors. higher the wind the more torque.

Thanks fellas. Next question, what about the ESC? I mean do I need a certain ESC for certain turn motors? It came with a NOVAK Rooster but it needs repaired and I'm currently running a Traxxas XL-5.

Many esc have turn limits on how low you can go. However you can run as high of a turn motor as you want as they put much less of a load on the battery and esc.

I wouldn't go lower than a 17 turn motor with the xl-5 esc unless you use a 550 motor, then you can go down to the 12t...But with a 540 can 17t or higher. Hotter motors will also eat through brushes and comms a lot faster...the hotter the motor the shorter the life.

Keep in mind that when you go with a hotter motor you will need to pay close attention to the temp on the motor and esc as they can get out of hand very quick! I ran a 17x2 on my old RS4mt and it was a fun basher but if you really want speed and reliability brushless is the best option.
