Would a Slash 2wd work for speed running?

I have my Slash 2wd sitting as a slider, it has been collecting dust and I have been thinking about using it for speed running. It needs the RPM transmission case, new bulkhead (not sure to go with stock, aluminum, or rpm for this), lcg chassis, proper electronics, speed running body, 17mm hexes, DBoots Hoons, mod 0.8 gears, and bumpers for speed running.

Hey, pug. Good idea for putting that slider to use instead of gathering dust. Sounds like a good start. Are you going to begin a 'project thread'?

Pretty much the direction I'm going with my Rustler conversion from bracket drag racer to speed basher.

If I could make a recommendation, get it running and then begin adding speed incrementally as you build more into it. At least that's what I'm doing so I don't get in over my head with a fast truck I can't control. Making sure I have a good chassis that goes straight first. That and I haven't driven fast in a straight line for years. It's a perishable skill that needs re-honing. Good luck. Cheers. 'AC'

The slash should work, as long as its not a slash body as it will trap air.

Another option is the Rustler. I'm pretty sure it shares the bell crank with the slash. If its the same part, all you need is the rustler upper and lower rustler chassis.

The rustler was used for speed runs since 2007 or so. It seemed to be the only one everyone used. With that said, alot of people have research and developement on setups for it posted online.

I might do a build thread for it, it just depends on the amount of funds I have for it.

Delta Plastik makes tons of Slash speed run bodies. I don’t really want to convert it to a rustler as the Slash platform has a bigger chassis with more room for electronics and LiPos.

Here's a body size comparison, pug. Body on the left was my bracket racing body. Can't remember if it was a TRX, or possibly a PL. Anyway, it is considerably wider and "fatter" than the Gen2 Rustler body on the right. The Gen2 is the one I'm using for the speed basher. Looking to probably add fences for lateral stability to the outside of the RR spoiler when it hits the bench for project upgrade in January.

Oh, apologize for the out of focus image. Shaky senior moment, I guess. Generally, use a tripod for my images. I'll re-take it and post it to my project thread soonest.

Anxious to see what you come up with. Cheers. 'AC'

Also, since the front bulkhead is destroyed, what should I replace it with? RPM, stock, or aluminum?

What advantage to you see to upgrading to aluminum over composite?

I'm staying with stock composite on my truck. It had a record of banging the side boards on occasion without damage. Albeit it was a slow speed hit ~30mph. RPM makes bullet-proof components, so perhaps it as a back-up or option try? I run my front suspension soft sprung rather than rigid, so there should be no twisting moment imparted to the bulkhead through the arms at speed. I am going to RPM HD hub carriers in the rear though, with larger live axle bearings.

Cheers. 'AC'

Yes, definitely! You also might want to play around with the suspension and alignment settings to get it tracking as straight as possible. And for the bulkhead, stock or RPM would work (aluminum just makes it heavier and doesn't really provide much better durability).

Also, is there any particular reason why you would want to switch to the RPM transmission case as opposed to stock?

If you're talking about doing full fledged speed runs like 100+MPH then I would consider going with the Rustler chassis as opposed to the slash chassis. less surface area for wind to push against and bodies are smaller. Whichever chassis you decide to use make sure the front tires have the same stance as the rears. On a Rustler I used Stampede arms on the front to make the front as wide as the rear.

Also the RPM tranny wont work, you'll need a tranny case with an open motor mount area so you'll need the Hot Racing or Integy tranny.

You'll want the aluminum bulkhead. you're gonna want as much weight as possible especially on the front. You'll likely have to add weights to the front of it, especially if you go with the Rustler chassis.

Id go with GRP wheels & tires instead of Dboots.

Id also go with Mod 1 gears instead of mod.8

I found someone that used a Slash 2wd for speed running and it worked fine.

I also already have the rpm offset compensating arms on the front.

Go for it, pug.

The 130mph vid shows a nice clean run. Taking Greywolfs recommendation regarding an aluminum bulkhead up front, there is a weight pack taped to the front of the Slash in the vid. Looks like wolf is spot on with his recommendation.

l'm thinking you might need to add weight up front if you go with a full-sized body. My sick mind does tell me it would be fun to see the front end lft up and over going about 110mph. hee.... l'd use the Rustler body to minimize the body fillng up wth air.

I will probably cut vents in the front of the body to try to eliminate parachuting. I’m in the process of fixing the leaky shocks and lowering them right now.

I have a Rustler thats done 118MPH so I have some experience. Glad to see ppl are able to do the same thing with the Slash. I was afraid the body would act too much like a parachute. I had problems as it was just with the Rustler body at first. I had to add 1lb 1oz in lead weights to the front of my Rusty.

I managed to lower the rear shocks by putting internal spacers in them.

sorry about the bad photo, I am using my bulky iPad. I am going to start a build thread once I get the money to get it started.

When l drag race my Rustler l put a half roll of quarters behind the front bumper. ln fact, the car handles waaaay better with the added weight so l've left it there.
