Just installed Windows 7 beta on a pc I'm planning on using for a HTPC. Do we have any computer geeks also testing Windows 7? Any hits or tips to know about the new OS?

Hmmm..... so it is an OS and not some kind of word thing like someone was telling me. An OS that is coming out sense the hard push for Vista... Hmmm.... the irony.

Well all I know is that MS is basing it visually on Vista except for the task bar and that they're making it smaller (load faster) and much easier to use.

Not holding my breath for those promises though.

Well so far I have it installed and while it reminds me a lot of vista, I am liking Windows 7 so far. It does seem much faster then the Vista Business I was running.

I'm waiting for my Radeon HD 4550 video card to come in tomorrow so I can hook this up to my TV and see how moives play.

Beason,

Do you have any MS certs? If so, then you can go to: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx - from there you can get a 32-bit or 64-bit activation key. I think the download links are not working from MS anymore so you'll have to find it on a bit-torrent or something and then use the key you got from the above link.

I HATED vista with a passion, this machine I'm running on is a dual core 3.2Ghz with 4GB RAM and it seemed like it crawled as bad as an old PII... horrible. Windows 7 on the same computer is a very noticable difference.

The thing that's taking a few to get used to is the new task bar, other then that I can't wait to hook this up to the TV and give it a spin.

i dont have any certs.. i have vista on my laptop which is a 64bit amd with 2 gigs of ram. it runs very well on it. i can't complain. it is however only running in 32bit mode.

i am also beta testing vista at work on a dual core intel with 2 gig of ram and its pepy there to.

Vista aint peppy on a 2gig celery stick (Celeron processor). Ran the windows 7 beta and it zoomed along. Got bored with that though and reinstalled XP. i'm XP all the way now. But windowes 7 does have some issues and bugs, mainly about drivers and compatability. Thats why its still at a beta stage.

you guys with your "windows".. I fart in your general direction....lol

like toys... windows is weak in soooooo many ways.. just get a real OS!!! lol

LINUX TILL DEATH.

actually, running dual boot.. wifey can't operate a "man's" OS or as she calls it..

Stay with XP... Its tried and trued. plus SUPER easy to mod!!!!

Just show her how to load VirtualBox for her Windows GUI of Doom and blow away that wasted partition :)

Windows 7 is essentially Vista 2.0... or, what Vista would have been had they not cut out a large number of features from the original Vista roadmap to meet shipping deadlines.

Don't forget Microsoft's way of fixing things though: throw a patch that fixes one problem but creates 2 more.....

I'm not going to waste time, effort, and disk space for another junk OS.. not even in Vmware..

So far I like it. I have it running on a virtual box partition though. I will say finally someone at Microsoft has a sense of humor with the Beta fish as the background. So far I like it. It appears to me to be a version of Vista that is just not so resource intensive. I have not done much else with 7 other than poke around at it. I must say though... I like the Paint program! LOL

Yeah I was a little surprised about MS Paint - talk about a total transformation over say the old Windows XP paint.

I've really been digging it and if it wasn't for my trial to end in August I would install it on my main computer.

The only problem I've had is getting a wireless nic to work with it on my HTPC. I need to use a low profile card or use a USB card. Finding a low profile is a very hard thing to find, however with the use of NewEgg I think I've found a decent USB wireless NIC that a number of people said has worked w/o issue with Vista 64bit - if I get that going I'll be happier then a pig in mud.
