Why the price differences???

I've been asking questions about engines lately and what I'm seeing is that there's lots of engines out there in the 26 to 28 region that make as much or more power than high price 21 racing engines. What's up with that?

Is there any reason why I should get a 21 race engine if I can pick up a 26 or 28 and get just as much power at a lower cost. (other than the 21 can be used in whatever sanctioned races??).

I'm really questioning whether I should spend 220 on a 21 engine or spend 130 on a 26 - 28 engine of the same power.

Sure would like to get some opinions. Thanks!!

becuase iif you race, and where you race follows roar rules. then you are limited to a .21 engine.... and a good race .21 such as the RB concepts, novarossi, etc will actually be faster then the .28's... those .21's are screamers

I dunno man, that wasp puts out some major hp and rpms... like 42,000 rpms or so... thats crazy!!!!

I have to say, when you hear a high end 21 hitting peak rpm's, it sounds nothing like the 28's. I've downloaded a buttload of movies and you can pick the RB's and sirio's out of the pack easily. Right around the RPM's a "normal" engine that I could afford would self destruct, these things kick in and give you more. And oh, how do they scream!

I'll never buy an engine over $200, but I envy those that do and can afford it.

"you get what you pay for" applies here... I agree with olds you can definately hear the difference. gotta love the sound of 300+ dollar .21's turning super high rpms

Exactly, but the race engines is where the engine designers dump their money into. Anyone can make a big block engine with throbbing power... but to make a top of the line engine that is going to be backing a full national/international racing team, they put top dollar into the mill. This is kinda why they are fast as hell and scream. I never rely on the specs, and if i did, then I guess i have a .15 made by Traxxas that spins 50000 rpm... we all know its BS.

These engines don't cost more because they "sound great". And don't equate RPMs with being faster. You also have to consider torque.

If you look at the big blocks they are usually 3 port type engines. The racing .21 have more ports than that and are tuned.

But, rpms does equal speed... If you dont have the rpms, you are gonna lose some speed... If you have an engine, with the exact same gearing on the exact same car, but one spins 7,000rpms more than the other, what would go faster, if both engines produced the same hp and tq?

It would depend on where each motor makes its most hp's in the rev range and what type of a track you are running in its composition and length.

If you were running on a small track, you're gonna want something that doesn't have to spin up that few thousand RPMs to get to its peak horsepower.

There is really alot to consider. Try talking to guys that race 1:1s and they'll tell you about RPMs, HP, and Torque....

do you race where you need to limit to a .21? if not id say get a .28 like a wasp ...it wont be the same as a high dollar race .21 but its not $300+ either .... it wont be as hard to tune & will probily last longer

That is true about engine life, unless you were to bash with that .21, then it MAY be a different story. The engines that are used for bashing and sometimes racing (like the .247 and up) are dirt cheap to make compared to the .21. Also the reason why so many new companies are sprouting up!

Ok....I'm not sure we arrived at a consensus. Ah well. I've been hearing a lot about this Wasp .28. Where do I get it?? It seems to be one of the favored ones for the 28's and it's a high spinner type.

As for the questions about racing...no, I would club race and they really don't care what you bring. Maybe I'm getting closer to an answer as to which engine to buy.

Well I have a Wasp .28 in my buggy right now and I also just won a Novarossi P5 on ebay. If I keep my buggy (may have to sell it) I will be able to compare the two. You can get Wasp .28s on ebay for 150 NIB.

when looking at the different price between the high dollar .21's and the cheaper .28's... just look at where they are manufactured. the high end .21's are typically made in Japan or Italy whereas the less expensive motors are made in China.

get a fantom .27...specs read ok but it is awsome all around power......almost linear power band from the feel...I had to zero out my throttle expo settings.....great engine for the price...I still like my RGs too but I am very stoked on the fantom big boy too.....
