Ok, tired of local hobby shops.

I go in to get a big 1.5v lantern battery and the clips. this isn't a chain store, but a one man show.

I tell the guy what I want. I Grab the battery, he grabs a clip from the back. I whip out my wallet (seems like its about done right?)

So he says why do you want one of these. "Because I really suck at tuning, and when I dial in from rich, I like to leave it on so it doesn't die"

Him "Well, if you gt it tuned right, you won't need this"
Me "you got somone hear that can tune this thing then?"
Him "Nope"
me "how much do I owe you?"
Hm "What were you using before?"
Me (sigh)"A rechargable"
Him "your battery probably dead, how long you charge it?"
Me (grrr)"overnight"
Him "prolly a bad battery"
Me "no it's, good it just takes me a while to tune, I'm new"
Him " should last all day if its tuned right"
Me " I just dont want to worry about dead glow warmer batterys"
HIm "Well you can't recharge these big ones"
Me "Yes, I know but they last a long time"
Him "No if you're using it all day"

He puts back the glow clip, and tosses a single cell sub C at me.
Him "this is what you need"
Me trying to leave and be polite "Yeah, probably i'll come back payday"
Him to his groupies in the shop(heard it through the door) "God I hate when people come take up all my time with questions have me grab poop. Then don't buy anything.

He had me leaving thinkin I was a total idiot for wanting a 1.5v battery and a clip Grrrph. After trying to tune last night I know why I went in the first place. I dont want to have to wonder about glow batteries, just one more thing to piss me off.

I also wanted a hotter glow plug because I thought tunning would be easier going from slobbering rich to a fine tune. Walked in another day and got the same damned lecture. "you don't need a hot plgu if you got it tuned right"

Well NO poop! Come tune my rigs and you can tell me what I need. Grrph I think I want to o to seattle for my next LHS visit lol

Sucks! I know! the last thing you need, when you know excatly what you need, is a know it all hobby shop owner. I would have put the battery on the counter and simply walked out, after telling him that he needs to just shut up sometimes and the product will sell itself, A good hobby(local) store is hard to find as it is, but when you have to deal with poopy service like that its even worse. I travel over an hour sometimes to a shop that has one guy I can trust and dosnt make me feel like I just came in to use the bathroom, I also have a shop 5 minutes away from my house that has employees with there heads up there asses! I have found it better to make a bond with one person at the shop, and deal with that person only, after a while of several return trips to give them your money they realize that you know what you came in for and dont even try and sell you unwanted poop.

What gets me is the fact that the dude was an expert on what you needed, but didn't know poop about how to actually tune an engine. The only time I trust someones advice about my rigs is if I see them work on other rigs. Luckily the guys at my LHS know what they're doing. It kind of suprises me though that that happened at a non-chain store.

I take my LHS for granted. They will sell you what ever you want but will offer up, and follow through with advise on what you need for your particular situation. I guess I'm spoiled. The drawback and glory is that they are always busy and each sales person will only help one person until they are done. Sometimes I stand there for 30-45 minutes just to get rung up for a part I pulled off the wall. I learn a lot by listening in and know that when its my turn, I will get exactly what I need but pay the price in time.

I have been into a few shops that will not only try to sell you what they make the most money on but will try to beat it into your head that they know exactly what you need and make you feel stupid for not taking their advise.

I choose to do business with my LHS whenever possible. Its like my doctor. They know my equipment. They know my driving habits as well as my knowledge level. If I come in with a weird issue they can help put the puzzle together and get the proper answer and or part/s.

My lhs owner is sort of a pric too, if you're not too sure as to what is you need he'll get all smart ass like. And he has a couple of employees that just get on my nerves, but i can sometimes get along with all of them. The only reason i go there is coz its so damn close to my house. But theyre starting to come around, i think coz I'm starting to learn a little more and know what I'm going in there for, and they see my face more often. Anyway thats my lhs story.

Sometimes it pays to just go in, say this is what I want. What's the total? Pay the price and walk out. Regardless of the help offered, LHS owners are not always the right person for the job. I have found that it is best to get my info on-line and then just go in to the shop and buy the parts I need. Other times, I am very selective about who in the LHS I talk to about those "what if" situations. They know me, and I know them. That is probably the best way to work a LHS.

I sold my EB4 and bought a Kyosho just because the idiots from the Thunder Tiger distributors, they where charging me the prices they wanted each time, once I complained for charging me a different price from last time for the same things, just some fuel and a couple glow plugs, his answer was, sir those are this week prices, you may come next week and maybe you are lucky to find better prices! After this dumb answer I sold the car and changed to an other LHS. The new one is great, nice buddies and good prices.

the guy at my hobby shop is good but can be a crab sometimes its a semi chain because they have 2 stores and one warehouse i hate when you go somewhere and they always tel you to get this and that when all you need is nothing they have given you i wish i could do this  to some of the hobby shop guys around

The thing is, I know what I want I do the research, I'm also no idiot (cept' when it comes to a tune).

Last night I'm in pain, my knees don't work. I know that half the problem with the damned thing starting is a weak glow ignitor.

What did I do? one of the $19 1800 MAH ni cad packs I had for the rc10 electric. I quick charged it at four amps. The I ripped the 6 cells out and had four fully charged glow ignitor batteries. Today I am going to buy a battery box so I can charge them the same, 6 at once on the pack charger.

YEa I think everyone has a shop owner like that in there town. I call mine Jackass hobbies. Nuff said....

Then you find hobby shops like the one I went in buffalo when we were out there for the bash....it was a whole different vibe....makes you want to spend money. I think some of these guys with the attitudes have to go..oh well thats my:2cents:

well i am glad i have 3 LHS aroung me the one i aint aloud to go to evr again for some reasons. And the other one is only open Tursday Friday Sat, and Sun.And the Hobby Hut is open all the time but they are about 1 1/2 away.So so when i need fuel or soem odds and ends i will go to my LHS but if i need a shitload of stuff i will get it from TowerHobbies.I just placed an prder from tower fopr like $375 and parts and poop for my truck and i priced it on my LHS prices and at the two i go to it is like $100 more since they would have to order some poop.

Peace

sorry for the loing post

Yeah, I toatally know how you guys feel, there used to be a real butthead running the only store in my town.... the guy went belly up and now there's a pretty cool guy running a new store. Funny format, though... its half hobby store half comic book store. the parts selection is not the best but at least the guy is cool to deal with and doesn't try selling you the most expensive item. The funny part of it though is when the comic book guys come along and talk about dungeons and dragons, damn funny!

You liked Field's. did you?? I LOVE my LHS. Those guys are my hobby family over there. I feel very comfortable taking advice from them. I try and spend as much of my hobby $$$ over there as I can. :D

So i did it. I bought the 1.5v clip at the good stoe. went across town walk in (he sighs as I walk in) Grab the battery toss it on the counter and whip out the card.

He nice doesn't try to talk me out of it. He even says thanks lol. Maybe he knew I got the clip elsewhere I dunno

I have been to this "Jackass Hobbies" that Msly speaks of, too many times... I always end up walking out of there, shaking my head... Just the other day I was there to pick up some paint, when I over heard the shop owner (Mr. Jackass), telling this young kid that the reason why his engine isn't running right, is because he's using an OFNA fuel filter instead of the Dynamite one, that he happens to carry... I could hear him saying this, with his cocky attitude...
I remember when I first got into Nitro's with my Tmaxx, I bought an OS .15 CVX Hyper for it... I went to this guy for some glow plug advice. He asked what engine it was for, so I told him, an OS. He gave me this "over the glasses" type look, and said "Why would you buy an OS?"... You should have bought a Picco from me...
F that MoFo.... Msly & Wilsoncat will agree....

I used to get the same crap at my LHS.I gets me mad because I have worked in bodyshops for over ten years. When people ask me for advice I dont make them feel like a ass when they leave. Now i just write a list get what i need and I'm on my way.

Heres a pic of the Jackass who owns my LHS.

You do take it for granted. That is the best shop I have ever been to. From parts in stock to stuff getting ordered fast and right the first time, to great advice and no pressure to buy anything. I love Jakes Performance Hobbies and I buy ALL my kits there and a lot of parts. The rest I buy online. The LHS up here is a joke. I travel 3.5 hours to the LHS if that tells you how good it is. I have 4 other dhops in less than 2 hrs away but www.JPHracing.com is the BEST

I am in complete agreement with HB and Eddy regarding Jakes. I may not have to drive 3.5hrs to get there, but I do drive 40mins when there is a hobby shop less then 10 minutes away. Jakes is the best with a nice friendly atmosphere and excellent parts selection. Prices are fair as well.
