most RC magazines only talk about American made RC's? Or at least all the ones I've been looking through, like RC Driver, Car Action, and Extreme Cars? They mainly talk about TRAxxAS, "sorry my "x" key doesn't work on this keyboard so I had to copy and past those, that's why there not capitals." HPI, Savage, Tmaxx, Team Losi, and Team Associates. I know those are all good brands, from what I hear. But I was just curious is to why that's all they mainly talk about, and not other brands, like car magazines do. I'm mainly just wondering this myself because I have a Japanese brand. And I never hear anything about it. :( lol

PS I don't mean to offend anyone if you do have those brands.

It's mostly to do with whatever brands will pay for the advertising. That, and brands like Smartech don't really make a good product (they just poorly copy a semi-decent product using poor materials).

Overall, it boils down to who's willing to pay and who isn't.

That, and oft-times, some companies re-badge their stuff and sell under other names... Example, Hao-bao in Europe is Ofna over here in the 'states.

HimotoRacing,

HeartBreak pretty much nailed it on the head - who's willing to pay. Just like why does all the magazines give every RC a great review? Never once have I seen a review on an RC or product and they said that the part was just terrible and not worth it. The guys that they are doing reviews on are the same guys putting money in their pockets and food on their tables.

I'm also into atvs and subscribe to 3 atv magazines and although they cover american and jap brands, the thing that is the same, is they give good reviews on every quad and sxs, except for one magazine, who will tell you when a quad or product sucks
he who pays the most, wins

Like Dirt Wheels, they are in love with Yamaha, seems like every shoot out they do...the winner Yamaha, I'm not saying Yamaha isnt a good bike....Let said in the Post above it all come down to the mighty BUCK

Yeah the people doing reviews know that they can get away with a poor review every once in a while, but as a company you are not going to spend the majority of your advertising budget with a magazine that tells people not to buy your product 10 pages after your full 2 page add that just cost you an arm and a leg. So it comes down to taking care of those who feed you. I don't agree with it, but I think that's the way it is in most cases. Also, the magazines are going to do a lot of their testing and features on RC's that are popular at the time. If the whole world is going crazy about something HPI has out, then it makes sense to write articles on that rig and put it on the cover, because of all the people that would be interested in that magazine. If everyone is going crazy about the Axial AX-10, then it might not make since to have a magazine full of smartech RC's, because the majority of the people that buy RC magazines at the newsstand are going to buy something that interests them, and if the majority of the people are interested in crawling, then it wouldn't make sense to write about RC moune traps.

And don't forget, all the magazines you alluded to are American publications. It's just a natural tendency to draw attention to American goods.

Yeah I was going to mention that. There are several magazines from China and Japan that specialize in overseas RC's.

BAM YO!

I have never seen Traxxas in a Japan RC magazine......but I have seen Tamyia and Kyoshio in US stuff......not to mention HPI.....main base is Japan?

CharliesTheMan, I think Candyman makes more of a valid point about American publications showing more of what American readers are interested in.

Take for example, 1/5th scale RC's. They've been around for some time now, and is huge across the pond. It wasn't until HPI released the Baja 5b did 1/5th scale gain ground here in the States. So I don't think it's what the "whole world is crazy" about but more of what Americans are about at the time.

Makes a lot of sense what you all are saying. I never really thought of it that way. But if some brands are really that big over seas, why arnt they forking over money to feature there product in the American magazines to get there product out there in the US?

Tamiya pretty much started it all back in the early 80s with their electrics. Grasshoppers, Frogs, etc. Then they introduced the Terra Crusher that put ALL the nitro monster trucks in line to compete.
If you're into planes, Kyosho was always pretty big in that. I have their big twin ducted fan electric Lear Jet. It was the model of the year for 2001.
