Ok I've thought it over and the MT410 is definitely the style I want to go with for him.

He has 2 real trucks so I think he'd like the monster truck look more with the bigger tires

And it seems the MT410 is super durable, which is a big plus.

I'm open to other manufactures other than Tekno, but the MT410 is the style & ruggedness I want.

Now I need some help finding a good deal on a new one.

I see on Tekno's website they have them on sale for $369 right now, but they're sold out?

Do you think their website will have them back in stock & still at this price any time soon?

Will any other retailer of these be having a great black friday sale on the Teckno MT410?

I'm seeing the internet prices all over the map for these, even all the way up to $850 - why the huge price swing? What should I be looking for to make sure I'm getting the right kit and not getting ripped off?

Can I get any color body I want? I know he'd want it to be red.

You guys have all been super helpful and I think we've got it narrowed down to an awesome RC he's going to love building and playing with.
There are different types of kits out there. Some come with a complete RC, some are minus electronics, some are just a roller (chassis with wheels/tires), etc. The MT410 kit is just a slider kit, meaning it is just the chassis, with no body, tires, or electronics. You will need to get the following items to complete it.

Here is some parts I had picked out for my build. There are lots of ways you can build this, so do some research and see what you guys might like to use for these parts:
Body - https://www.towerhobbies.com/produc...aptor-clear-body-monster-truck/PRO346800.html

Wheels/tires (you need 2 sets as they are sold in pairs) - https://www.towerhobbies.com/produc...-mt-mounted-17mm-black-raid-2/PRO1016610.html

I was also going to grab 3 or 4 pinions here, starting at 15t up to 18t - https://www.amainhobbies.com/robins...n-gear-w-5mm-bore-15t-rrp1215/p454463?v=25020

Motor/ESC - https://www.towerhobbies.com/produc...nd-42782250kv-g2-motor-combo/HWI38010405.html

Servo (lots of other, and cheaper choices for servos, but I like me some Tekin stuff) - https://www.towerhobbies.com/produc...v-high-torque-metal-gear-servo/TEKTT1505.html

Best advice, shop around for best prices. Amain and Tower Hobbies are the two places I buy from most. On ebay, there is Go Nitro Hobbies that are really good people to deal with, and they sometimes have some good deals on stuff.

The Tekno stuff usually has some good black Friday deals. Also, if you watch Tower Hobbies (sign up for their emails) they will have a 4x or 5x points sale, and those points turn into $ on subsequent orders. Their Super Saver club used to be a lot better when they had coupon codes, but it looks like they got rid of that. F'n Horizon 🤬 But look at the Super Saver perks and see if ya wanna buy into that.

Just this stuff alone puts you just over $1000. You will still need a charger, batteries, paint, tools, etc.

Ok thanks for that parts list and website suggestion!

I was wondering what a good place to get all of the other parts from was, so I'll use those websites you suggested

If I was buying this for me, I probably would buy it used and save a ton. But for my son's Christmas present, I want him to have a new kit to open and put together piece by piece himself. that's what he loves a lot is the building and tinkering. Plus this way when something breaks he'll be familiar with the pieces and know how to replace it.

So will Tekno have the MT410 kit back in stock for black friday do you think?

Towerhobbies has the kit, but for $480, a lot more than Tekno. Would Towerhobbies offer it for the same price as Tekno for black friday?

https://www.towerhobbies.com/product/110-mt410.3-1-4wd-electric-monster-truck-kit/TKR5603.html

I'm going to get him the kit and the tires I think for xmas. If I could get everything I would, but this isn't a cheap hobby & I'm not rich lol. We'll get the other pieces & parts over the next couple of months as funds allow.

I've seen a video where a guy said 4 tires were like $80 and the ones you linked to are basically double the price. Are the ones you linked to just a lot better or something? Would there be a cheaper 4 tire bundle than those?

That Traxxas does look really sweet, but definitely out of the budget as is in that ebay link. Does this Traxxas have a build kit like the MT410?

Thanks again for everyone's input & help, it's been great!

No, the X-Maxx is not available as a kit. But another option is jennysrc.com. you can buy RC's there piece by piece if you want, but it will cost more in the long run than just buying the ready to run version.

There are cheaper tires. I chose the belted ones, which are more expensive. The belted tires don't balloon as much as non-belted tires. Maybe @9x19 has some input on his build that may give you some different ideas.

As for Tekno getting them back in stock, you'd have to contact them about that. I kinda doubt the sale price will still be going on after they restock them though. Usually a sale is just to clear out old inventory.

Ok then I'll just stick with the Tekno MT410, it seems this hits every mark I'm looking for.

What is the benefit of tires that don't balloon? Are they more durable and last longer?

I'm going to reach out to Tekno to see when they're expecting more stock of the MT410. I've got a month to go yet, so I have time.

You don't need belted tires, but if your son does a lot of backflips, which requires you to gun the throttle with the truck in the air, the tires can balloon and be torn apart. Then again, the non-belted tires are lighter, so less rotational weight will affect how the truck performs both on the ground and in the air. I just chose the belted version for my build because I have never tried them. My parts list above is just for ideas. There are lots of different ways to go.

I just wanna say I think its really cool you doing this for your son. You went out of your way to put the rc thing together for him and I'm sure he appreciates it.

I would encourage you to check out the Reagan Park RC Race Track:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/TBiY48pWiheoZCZ18

I did the crawler thing for a while but lost interest after a year. I also got into drifting and lost interest after a year of that as well, same with just about every imaginable "basher class" you can imagine. Don't get me wrong, they were all very fun, but I would tend to lose interest after that "new toy" luster fades when playing solo.

It wasn't until after I discovered club racing where having some competition gave me clear goals and I've yet to lose interest in any form of competitive racing. I am far from a Pro level driver, but the beauty of racing is that I can strive to continue to get better and that's what keeps me engaged with the hobby.

That said, if you think club racing may interest you guys then I would encourage you to get a 1/8 Buggy where that will be the most popular race class.

The MT410 is considered to "King of Bashers" so if you decide to go this route then that's the best of the best.

The MT410.3 was discontinued and that $369 was a "fire sale price", they're about to release the MT410 2.0 which should be more in line with the $700 price of the EB48 2.1
https://www.teknorc.com/shop/tkr9003-eb48-2-1-1-8th-4wd-competition-electric-buggy-kit/

Note that if you are a veteran then TEKNO will offer a discount:
https://www.teknorc.com/military-discount/

They also offer a 50% warranty which is the best in the industry:
https://www.teknorc.com/warranty-repair/

The most expensive part of the hobby will be tires, they need to be replaced often and MT tires are the most expensive which will exponentially increase your long term running expenses. 1/8 Buggy tires offer the widest selection and depending on where you get them can be the least expensive among the classes.

I think the $369 was an end of summer sale price, but it might come back for Christmas?

You can use any body you like, and most come clear, so you can paint it as you like too.

I used the 1989 Ford F250 from JConcepts, but any body for a 13" wheelbase should do it.

You can sign up for a membership at Tower or Horizon and get a pretty good discount, it doesn't apply to all brands but it saved me $75 on my MT410.

There was an MT410 for $600 yesterday over on the Tekno forum in great condition. It’s gone now, that should tell you how good of a deal that was.

I looked and can't find any coupon codes there now. Did they get rid of it?

The club racing might be something he'd want to do at some point. That race track is only like 40 minutes away from us and we may go check it out and see if he likes it.

I know he'll love the MT410 too. Like everything, you do tend to lose interest in things. At least this is a buy once, cry once (for the most part lol) hobby
I just wanna say I think its really cool you doing this for your son. You went out of your way to put the rc thing together for him and I'm sure he appreciates it.
Thank you! Yeah I think he'll be pumped.

I made an account on Tower & signed up for the basic club membership. Do I need the paid membership to get the coupon? If I could get that $75 off, I would pull the trigger on their website since they currently have them in stock.

I also emailed Tekno to see if this kit will be back in stock for black friday/christmas, so I'm sure I'll hear back from them in a day or two.

Does Tower usually have a black friday sale? I want to track these close the next week and pull the trigger on the best deal.

Thanks guys!

Everyone has black Friday deals, another place to consider is

https://www.fiercercsolutions.com/

Contact Pete over there (tell him Bill sent you) and he'll get you squared away, he will often beat the Tower deals if you ask nicely, plus you can pretty much get everything you need on a single purchase through him, Tower is very hit/miss with the race grade accessories :(

I used to go broke saving money with Tower with their high pressure coupons suckering you into spending more money to save money on the next level. Having to spend money to save money really irked me so I made a clean break from Tower many years ago and it was liberating, ha!

Side note, the EB48 comes with a body, the MT410 does not and that's a $40 savings right there ;)

If you pay the $10 at tower they're offering 20% off. $10 to save $96...

Coupon code: SAVINGS

Good thru 11/22

To get it rolling, I'd suggest Jenny's RC for wheels/tires. New take-offs. I know the Traxxas 17mm fit, pretty sure the Aarma 17mm would too. Those Nitro Revo, while not world class tires, for a first set, they are priced right.

That's still a higher price than the link Bill posted. Thanks for sharing Bill. The MT410 is $479.99 at Tower. It's only $369.99 at Fierce RC.

some other threads that may come in handy:
For the MT410, I would get the HW Max8 + 4278SD Combo: https://www.hobbywingdirect.com/col...ts/ezrun-max8-g2-combo?variant=40028016738419

For the EB48, I would get the HW Max8 + 4268DB Combo: https://www.hobbywingdirect.com/col...ts/ezrun-max8-g2-combo?variant=40028016705651

15T pinion for either kit/combo

4S Battery for either kit/combo

MT410 will need a larger capacity battery: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09BHMFRB1

EB48 will need a LCG battery: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09CMHWHLL

I prefer to use EC5 connectors, where Zeee comes with these already installed on the battery. Note that the HW ESC I linked above comes with XT90's and they are wired for saddle packs so you'll need to re-solder a single connector anyway as TEKNO doesn't offer a saddle pack layout.

So SAVINGS seems to be a 10% off coupon

So if I buy the premium membership, there's a 20% coupon I'll get?

Tekno got back to me saying they are waiting on a new shipment, but unsure of the ETA. They said check back after black friday to see if they have a ship date.

I'll try and hold out a bit, I'm not in a rush really as long as I can find one in stock within the next month. Just hate to miss out on one in stock when so many other places are out of stock right now.

Thanks for all of those great parts suggestions. I'll comb through them one by one as we're at those step

If I can get this for under $400, I'll be able to pick up the wheels too

Tower was charging $35 in tax, so that eats up a lot of that 10% savings. Is there a retailer with no tax?

Doubt you'll find one not collecting taxes.

Yes, if you spend the $10 for the Tower Super Saver Club, SAVINGS gets you 20% off, which in this case is $96.

I was thinking about the SCT410 2.0, but it is on back order, and they can't give you a ship date. I could still order and get the 20% off, but I'd rather wait as well. I'm already a premium member and it has paid for itself easily. The coupon that was active when I bought my MT410 was for $75 off a $400 order, once I added a body shell, I was just over that.

Best of luck in your search.

Ok and you're saying this savings coupon is only going to be good until Wednesday 11/22?

I'll have to pull the trigger tomorrow if that's the case
