I wouldn't blame any set of wheels or tires, I'd blame the clutch bell and spur ratio.
17/38 gearing, wide ratio RR gear set.
If the tyres don't hook up then the load on the driveline is a lot less - if they dead hook all that torque quickly finds the weakest link, in this case the primary shaft in the trans.
The big joes behave like a drag slick, lots of sidewall to wrinkle up & take the shock out of the tyre/road interface so they hook up real well.
