I run an oil change place for a living and today two elderly ladies came in to have her lights checked out on her Buick. It ended up being a front turn bulb that we replaced for her. After we had billed her out we of course just starting talking about how gas stations would give you full service and nowadays that does'nt happen anymore. Then the one lady who still drives says I only drive my car in my zip code and would you know, I don't know how to fill my car with gas! Me and my coworker are looking at ourselves in total disbeleif. Theses ladies had to be in their seventies and we did not ask. But how can you be still driving these days and have no clue on how to check anything on your car or better yet, Fill the gas tank! I also told my assistant manager to please drive the car out of the shop just in case. That's why people need to be retested at a certain age free of charge so people can stop running into buildings in western NY and other areas.

I thought that at a certain age people were automatically relocated from New York to Florida..... j/k

I kind of agree with the sentiment of retesting, though.

Theres no excuse for not knowing how to do that, check your oil, change a tire and so on. Basic info that you have to know to beable to drive in my opinion.

and.....

Perfectly good Wiper Blades need to be replaced...

Extra cost for special *Synthetic* grease for the Muffler Bearings.

OOOOhhhhhh Mr. Customer You've got a Leak in your Transfer Case, let me reffer you to my buddy Bob the UBER Dishonest Mechanic that was kicked outta the Military. He'll take care of you.

Nope, I've never, ever heard of someone who Drives and Doesn't know how to put gas in the car. That's a trip. Lots of people(who are physically capable) can't change a tire.
We had a Full Service Texaco around the corner from my house that Finally went outta business a couple years ago. They where Very honest and priced fair(for Labor anyway). They did great work plugging tires. Whenever we had to have them plug a tire on one of my fathers Customers cars(or his) their was a Line of OLD persons waiting to have their gas pumped.:D It was 20cents more per Gallon if I recall for *Full Service* which included pump your gas, basic Glass Cleaning and Washer Fluid Top off.

Yes, everyone should be retested. Driving isn't a right it's a Privledge...period. The # of Persons whom Die every year in the USA from Car Accidents is still HORRIBLE! Heart Breaking.

Before either my sister or I could get behind the wheel, we had to know how to put gas in the car, check the air pressure in the tires and check the oil. I even learned to be a fair shade-tree mechanic.

I recently read that Queen Elizabeth can check oil, change tires and do a tuneup. You think there's a punch line coming, but it's true. She drove a military ambulance as part of the British military requirement during WWII and ALL drivers had to know about their vehicles.
I'm willing to bet that she doesn't do her own work on that Rolls any more. :hehe:

Isn't there still a state in this country (CT maybe?) that requires all gas stations to be full service? I could be wrong, but I thought I remember hearing something about that not too long ago. It was a big deal cause some guy (from out of state) pulled into a gas station and the attendant was in the bathroom or something, so not knowing he wasn't supposed to pump his gas, he just got out of his car and started doing it, which pissed off a bunch of people.

I had to teach my grandmother (who is like 78) how to pump gas when my grandfather passed away. He used to take care of everything car-related. She knows how to do that now, but I still do her tires, oil, wiper fluid, etc etc. It's not a matter of being old either, because she's still a good driver, she just never knew or needed to know, because she never had to do it before.

This person never had to learn because her husband does it for her to this day. That's why this country is changing from a do it yourself society to a do it for me society. I only charged her for the bulb which I think is reasonable at 11.99 which includes install but I refuse to sell someone more than two because the bulbs don't cost that much to begin with.
