Hey guys, i am looking into getting a buggy. i want a nitro as i currently have an electric Traxxas Stampede. i am wanting to dive into the world of nitro but i don't know where to begin. i am lost when it comes to buying my first car. i dont know what are good brands? what brands to stay away from? whats a good beginner buggy that i can learn with but also is customizable so that i can revamp it later and make it more to meet my needs. someone help me please. where should i look. i live in Union, Mo which is about 30 mins from St. Louis. if you're from around the area maybe you can suggest a good hobby shop. I've always gone to checkered flag.

I'm glad your getting a nitro !!

Are you looking for a race buggy or something to bash and mess around with ?

Also is price range important ? I would consider mainly those 2 things because just knowing what your budget and style of driving will be can determine..

HPI makes great great stuff !!

HPI is always know for their durability and just fun vehicles http://www.ebay.com/itm/HPI-Racing-...pt=Radio_Control_Vehicles&hash=item2a233e1f90

Losi in my opinion is race oriented how ever they do make some decent bashers aswell.

Also price is usually alittle higher.. this is more of a race oriented buggy but it comes with ALOT http://www.ebay.com/itm/Team-Losi-B...pt=Radio_Control_Vehicles&hash=item2322439815 starter box, nice spektrum dx3s radio.

I personally think this is a nice deal http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ofna-1-8-Ul...pt=Radio_Control_Vehicles&hash=item2ec1e6e20a Ofna is pretty good and for just under 300 bucks is pretty decent.

Team AE ( associated ) Is alittle pricey and race oriented as well but forsure a good quality vehicle.

I personally buy all of my hobby parts and even my vehicles from ebay besides fuel because ebay doesn't have a good selection of fuel. I support ebay because they have good prices and great selection of parts and vehicles.. and you can see how much shipping is before you order it. usually alot of online sites will not tell you the shipping price untill youve already placed the item in your shopping car and pressed order now.

Usually if you have never owned a nitro vehicle there are a couple things you need to have.

Fuel
Glow plug igniter
couple extra glow plugs
fuel bottle
wrench if the vehicle you buy doesn't come with one.

Generally most rtrs I've bought do not come with a good glow plug igniter... usually its a crappy d battery powered one that usually isnt rechargable. and some dont include a charger.

I would suggest buying thishttp://www.ebay.com/itm/Redcat-Racing-Nitro-Starter-Kit-Glow-Plug-Charger-Tool-Fuel-Bottle-Free-Shipping-/150873740160?pt=Radio_Control_Vehicles&hash=item2320c69380 It comes with every thing you need to get started besides the fuel.

Good luck and welcome to the club! :first_place:

For top quality at a good price I recommend Ofna. They are made excellent. I don't have a Losi. I've heard they are the best but they are VERY expensive. Kyosho is also one of the best but in the same price range as Losi. I have an XTM buggy and it's OK but not as nice as the Ofna. You should be able to get one on Ebay for around $300.

I can't complain about my Xray buggy. tuff quality

X-Ray makes a great buggy. It's top quality. It's also very expensive.

I'm not looking into getting into racing. i basically just want to pick up an old hobby again. i don't want to spend a lot of money but at the same insistence i understand that if i don't spend the money now it'll cost me later. also, idk if all nitro's are customizable but i want something that ill be able to change around, buy new and better parts for once i get the hang of it. are the buggy's you suggested customizable in that aspect?

Yes also any name brand nitro vehicle are customizeable. Usually the off name brand nitro buggies dont have many aftermarket parts... But as far as the name brand stuff... theres options... and motor options.. technically any nitro vehicle can be swapped from its stock motor to an aftermarket one.. but usually name brand rc's will have more options in general.

OK. So I've been looking at the cars that you have suggested and they are a bit expensive for what I'm wanting to spend right now. I really wanted to stay closer to 300. Most all of these care are 500+ So does this mean I have to buy an off brand and forfeit the customization of the car? Or, of I did get an off brand car for a little cheaper, I could always buy the brand name parts and replace the lower ones as needed correct? also what do you think about EXCEED? i found this brand online and it seems pretty cheap and it says there parts are interchangeable with other bigger names that I've heard dealing with my electric truck. also what would be a good size motor to be starting out with, with the understanding that I'm not entirly new to RCing. .16? .18? also, what about kyosho?

You could look at the Losi 810, it's marketed as an 1/8 scale but is on the smaller side of that class. I've read great things about it, and the one we sold at my shop has held up pretty good. It will at least get you a nitro buggy to start with (staying around $300) and if you decide to upgrade to a bigger and better rig, you will have some nitro experience.

+1 with the Losi 810. Stay away from exceed, there rigs are made cheap and parts can only be ordered from there site.

+100. Buying quality from the start is the only way to go, nothing will ruin your enthusiasm quicker then a new cheap brand rc that breaks ever time you look at it funny.

I love thier claim of use other major brands parts to fix it, I don't know about you but almost no 2 brands are the same & exceed doesn't say who's/which model they ripped off.

Thanks so much guys. I appreciate it so much for all your help. After i asked about the exceed i looked more into it and found exactly what you all said, I'm staying away from them I've really been looking into a Kyosho DBX 2.0 I've seen a lot of reviews on it and a lot of racers have it. It seems pretty good and I really think I'm gonna get it, what you think?
