I am going to be upgrading to a drop in OS .18 tm soon in my t-maxx. I know this motor is significantly more powerful than the 2.5, and I was wondering what are the weakest links in the transmission and driveline that usually break first. I might as well upgrade a few necessary things while the truck is down rather than wait until it's broke again. I don't really want to spend money on things that would hold up alright in stock form, but trouble areas are worth my time and money to solve. Also, would the stock clutch bell and spur work ok with this motor, or will I have to play around with that? I am looking for a no or small wheelie drag car style launch, with quick weight transfer from front to rear, and the rear squatting and the front unloading a bit. Wheelies are fun, but they are a waste of momentum when I am trying to race.

1. axles..
2. upgraded diffs..
3 steel spur
4. steel trans gears

the axles on t-maxxes suck the factory motor will twist those get cvd's
the diffs suck to rebluild them with aluminum housings and such or buy racing ones..
the spur is good plastic.. and is supposed to give you a week point.. but you dont want it striping on you during a race.. plastic + bashing = good plastic + racing = bad
i think they have steel trans gears for the max.. i would look into that

to start with i'd put the axles top of my list. some good strong cvds should sort that out.

next would come the slipper clutch which needs extra pins at the least - personally I'm using small steel ball bearings instead. if your going to replace the spur then why not go for robinson racing slipper/steel spur combo. http://www.robinsonracing.com/catalog/traxxas.html#slipkit

as for the diffs, speaking from experience with my picco maxx .21, it shouldnt be a problem if you get them shimmed up properly. I have more problems with the diffs skipping under braking to be honest. upgraded diffs would be nice but if your strapped for cash - see how you get on with the stock ones first.

if you havent already go forward only as reverse is more trouble than its worth and was a common cause of stripped gears for me. as for the rest of the tranny make your primary input gears the priority.

At minimum, put more pegs in the spur gear (12 I think total). Replace the center axles with cvd's and leave the outer axles as they are. They can be a cheap weak link to save your diffs somewhat and maybe the trans. And, they are pretty easy to replace in the field. Center axles suck to replace. You have to take either the front end/rear end totally off or the trans out. Either way, it sucks and takes more time.

Maybe replace the trans gears with RRP steel. A little heavier than stock, but it will make it tough as nails. You can replace all but the big two speed gears, but those last a long time with a BB 21 and RRP steel anyway.

as for the spur, go with the dynamite white gear ~$20 or so.

I'm not sure of the cost, but I hear people swear by them.
... my next upgrade is that.

RRP Slipper...or the strobe set if you can find em.....the strobe is an 1/8 scale gear pitch though....you'd use them if you are doing a BB conversion
