Hi there

Let's say I want to weather my factory painted TRX-4 Defender body by painting rust on only certain spots / panels.

Is this possible without repainting the entire body? Ie. Do I need to seal the rusty paint and how. How to prepare the spouts for paint etc.

Anyone who have done this before and who have some advice on how to approach this?

could you use a little nitro fuel and lightly rub it in the spots you wanted the rust. just keep going tilll the factory paint starts to get loosend up. then when youve got a few clearish spots hit it on the inside with some brown?
the old man was just black and my rough driving scraped paint off, then i threw some rubbing alchohol onto a rag and swiped it in a few spots. then hit it with some orange, to give the ilolusion of rust lol
i dont have nitro fuel to use so used what i had. it KINDA worked? lol not the worst anyhow.
hope this gives you a few ideas maybe bro, look forward to seeing yours

Well, lexan is painted on the inside so I'm not sure how the weathering would look on the outside. Anyway, you should check out scale builder's guild on YT and the forum of the same name. There's some really cool methods.

One thing you can do is spray the outside of the shell with flat clear. It will scrape off, but that just adds to the effect.

But the OP is dealing with a hardbody.

Wash the body well with soapy water and rinse well. I would recommend spraying the body with a flat coat of acrylic paint before adding weathering. If you are going for rust, you can dab the paint on with a sponge or brush. use wry light coat of paint on the sponge or brush and dab it on a clean paper towel until it is almost dry then apply the sponge or brush to the body. you can repeat until satisfied (do a search for dry brushing technique.) on youtube. you can layers varying colors to really get a nice effect. Washes are another great way to add depth to your weathering. Again lots of tutorials on youtube. When you get the desired look, seal it all with another coat of flat acrylic and you should be good. Sorry for not adding links but trying to type fast, lunch is almost over.

Do some searches on weathering techniques, just remember lexan and acrylic paint are what you want to use for good adhesion. :thumbs-up:
