Hi Guys,

Live in Australia with a 12 yo nephew in San Francisco, for his birthday I want buy him a nitro RC car.

I have no experience here so am asking you guys where I should start and what to look for? I believe he is interested in an on road styled car, he actually wants a Red Ferrari and I can not find one anywhere online. Anyway while looking for this it became obvious that there are RC Cars and there are RC Cars.

The number of channels, the frequency AM/FM, car setup etc etc so I thought I would ask the experts here for advice. I would not know one brand to the next and would like to get him a good one, something that will last and could be upgraded maybe in the future when hopefully he get's into it.

I don't mind pay around the $200 to $250USD mark for a setup.

I will be looking to buy the system online and have it shipped direct to my nephew so a recommendation of a good online company would be appreciated.

Hope you can guide me through the maze so I don't make a dud first up purchase.

Thanks and regards,

Fleetz

Having trolled around the forum which is excellent BTW there is more to nitro's than initially thought, tuning adjustments and other set up.

Maybe a good battery operation system should be considered in the mix. Advice here would be appreciated.

I'd recommend the Traxxas Rustler. It's a tough little truck with parts that are readily available and comes ready to run. All you have to do is put batteries in the remote and charge the main battery and go. The speed control for the motor has a training mode to limit it to half throttle until he gets the hang of driving it. Best of all it's just under the price range you give so you can add an aftermarket quick charger and/or an extra battery.

This is a good place to get it. I've had good luck when I've dealt with them:

i would go with a 4wd monster truck. means ur nephew can go to the park or a field or anywhere that has plenty of space. If you are going to go with nitro i would suggest buying from a hobby shop, u may pay a bit more than if u bought of ebay or something but if you know nothing about tuning or maintaining it would be handy to have somewhere u can go for hands on advice. you have to remember that rcs are goin to break and buying from a hobby shop means they will usually carry all replacement parts. I made the mistake of buying from ebay 2nd hand thinking i would save myself a bundle but you find out the hard way that u end up with all the gear and no idear :)

C'mon guys... he specifically said the child was interested in an on-road car. I understand everybody's general philosophy on what the best "all-around" kind of r/c is but at the end of the day the boy is interested in a Ferrari.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure if anybody is making 1:10 scale Ferrari bodies.

There ya go! Nice job Alpine.

Funny thing is.. I searched Tower for "Ferrari" looking for something Tamiya and didn't see that.
