Say you have a flame mask cut out for the side. You paint the body then peel it off. Say before I peel it off I cut around the design an 1/8-1/4 of an inch to give it a border and spray with another color. Has anyone done this? I dont have doctor hands which makes me leary but what I dont want is to score the body and it to be visible from the outside. Come on you paint pros around here help me out what do you do for borders? Is my Xacto knife with a new blade good enough?

I would cut the mask before you weed it and then transfer it to the body BEFORE you paint it. Then, pull the extra off since its already cut. Much easier to cut on a matt than the body, AND, you dont have to worry about scoring the body.

How about finding some 1/16 or 1/8 pinstriping tape to mask off the border? I wouldn't worry too much about scoring the body as long as you use a light touch. Just enough to get through the mask. I would worry about cutting the mask first as when you go to apply it you may leave a slight gap where you cut and one of your other colors may bleed through. What about trying Liquid Mask? I haven't used it yet, but I plan to on my next few bodies.

see I had tried it that way before and it did leave a gap where the color leaked through....good spot for a sticker. I have the 1/16 tape and I will try it. It is the Pactra kind but it still wants to come up if my mix is too this or too heavy. Got to find the sweet spot. Thanks to both of you! And I am off to inhale some paint fumes!!!!:w00t:

I've found that if you cut the masking tape on the body just use a very light touch. Afte you pull the cut peices off, go back and rub the edge of the tape down to make as tight a fit as possible. I used the rear of a round bic pen to push the tape down... And if you do score the lexan a bit, once its painted you'll neve notice unless your on it with a magnifying glass.

The masking tape I used here wasn't the best quality, so the pain leaked a little under the tape, But I tatoo-ed the wing on this buggy by just laying down a thick strip of macking tale and using an exacto to cut the shape.

I've cut the masking before. I don't notice anything. I usually cut around the window mask and then spray black to give like the actual rubber around windows...

Every website I read thats about painting says they swear by liquid mask and cut everything right there on the body. Personally, I suck at it.
