I need tuning help please, i dont know what I'm doing wrong.
Ok at idle it runs great, start to give it gas runs great. Put the throttle all the way down it chokes the engine, so i try tuning the HSN1/16 of a turn with a temp of 230-250. its starved for gas(lean) or is it to much gas(rich) only at wide open throttle its starved?
Help please

First you need to try and figure out if it is bogging at wot (rich) or starving for fuel at wot (lean)

Does it have a steady stream of smoke out the exhaust?

Is there raw fuel blowing out the pipe?

I dont know if your breaking in your engine, but this will happen periodically for the first few tanks... Bigblocks can be a bitch at the get go....

NC thanks man, yes it does have a steady stream of smoke.

yes i did break it in like HPI said about a 1/2 gallon

yes it has been broke in

imbroken what do you think?

If you've got a good stream of smoke then you're probably too rich and should lean the hsn in 1/4 turn increments until the engine runs right. Make sure that it's at normal operating temps when you make your adjustments.

Hey puff i did that 1/4 turn and very little smoke was coming out @250 still the same thing

when you turned it a 1/4 turn, I 'm assuming you went clockwise, did it make it better or worse?

Also, whaty are you using to get your temps?

I would say, bring your HSN back to breakin setting. Lean it about an 1/8th and see what that does... I've been at the point where I thought the engine was bogging on too much fuel, when all along it was too lean....

yes i do turn it clockwise (Lean) the same thing
i also use a temp gun from my lhs

Ok and hopefully you are turning the right needles here. If you idoling ok I'd lean out the Low Speed needle just a little bit and maybe go a 1/4 turn on the High speed needle.

same problem here

I was having the same problem with my 25 last night, I just got it broke in and I could never get it to wot. I started tuning on it and found that I was starving it of fuel(too..way too lean) and that was at 3 turns out. I started opening it up and just like magic it came to life, now it is as responsive as my real race car(IMCA modified). I will double check and see how many turs out I am and get back to you. Another thing you will have to account for is the outside temp. You may also have to adjust form my settings due to altitude I am in Denver 6000 ft.

yea i had the same problem i finally got it to idle and take off good but then right at about half throttle a little above it it just starts to bogg then stalls, so I'm not exactly sure what i dide but it was the low speed i belive i leaned it cuz i sound really richi of fuel ya no? so good luck in cold these carbs are bitches to tune

Tyson also check to make sure that you don't have a leak somewhere. If your lines have a hole in them it can also cause it to do the same thing. Also make sure that your gas tank seal is free of anything that would cause a pressure leak.

And if you do decide to throw it away, I'll catch it with my big hands. Just kidding. Hope you get it running.

thank you fellow savage owners
i will try to set it back to the factory setting and go from there
how do i do that? closing it clockwise or counter clockwise?

Make sure on the LSN that you gently hold the carb shut and adjust it while holding it. As you screw the needle in you should feel a slight pressure like the needle is trying to push the carb open. Stop there and tune to factory. If you dont you will find that the needle will screw in forever. I had the same prob.

Clockwise will close the needles, do not over tighten them or you will damage the needle and seat. Tighten them just until you feel it get snug, then back them out to factory settings.

About how many turns from the factory setting do you guys end up at ?

Tyson do you have your savage manual? It has illustrations on how to do this and the hpiracing faq's also have a lot of how to's for you to look at.
